What To Watch

Ok, I've been somewhat out of the anime scene for the last year or so. I've got absolutely no idea what series have been produced during this time, or what the current gems are. I'm looking to see if anyone can point out some good stuff to catch up on.

For some context,my favourite series are Planetes, Hikaru no Go and Saishuu Heiki Kanojo. I also like Mai Hime, Scrapped Princess and Escaflowne. The most recent series I was following were Snow Queen and Gakuen Alice, both of which have had a noticably slow release schedule.

So, any good stuff come/coming out recently you think I might like?

Do you like romance series?

Marmalade Boy, 76 episodes is a great series for romance.

Fushigi Yugi is great for fantasy, especially the manga. The couple are boyfriend and girlfriend for a long time during the series of Fushigi Yuugi and share a magical romance. The manga is a lot longer and better than the anime. The anime ends early and while it does have OVAs, the manga is much better. The engagement and marriage is continued in the manga and it shows that happens a long time after the ending and has a second part.

Bokura ga Ita is good, but it isn't finished yet.

Kare Kano is another famous series.

Kimi ga Nozomu Eien is alright.

For manga, Ayashi no Ceres is good, but the anime isn't, the anime cuts out too much.

The manga series Mars and Kare First Love (Not Kare Kano, different series) are really good, too.

Ok, checking out those series linked. I nabbed the first ep of Death Note, as it seemed to be the current big thing, but it didn't really grab me. It seems very emo. The concept was interesting, but I don't really see how they're going to keep it that way for a full series. I'll try out the next few eps at least.

I like romance, but generally prefer drama to comedy. I liked Kimi ga Nozomu Eien (even though the wrong chick got the guy). Fushigi Yugi and Kare Kano are both licensed I take it? I don't mind buying anime, but I generally prefer to be able to sample it first, and my local DVD stores are noticably lacking in any anime other than Evangelion or Dragon Ball Z.

I saw Mai Otome, Karuma, but I didn't really like it as much. Didn't get the same feel of forboding as I did with Mai Hime, and didn't like the characters as much.
