Meanwhile...
The interior of the ship was massive; it had taken a whole day for 16807 Cosine Phi to give them a cursory tour of the ship, and by the time it was over, the group was so dead tired from simply
walking around the vessel that they headed back to the
Normandy, telling the Monitor (apparently, that's what it was called) that they would return tomorrow.
Aurion was the first to wake up, and after his morning ritual, set out for the drydock first. The Monitor greeted him just outside the door. "Greetings, Master Aurion," it said cheerily. "I see you have come alone."
"Yeah," Aurion nodded. "I'm letting the others sleep. As for me... well, let's just say that my curiosity has been piqued."
"Understandable," The Monitor acted as if nodding. "You and your friends received quite a shock, as have I, mind you."
"I apologize again for not telling you sooner that we weren't who you thought we were," Aurion stated as the yellow-eyed construct led him back to the drydock.
"It is of no importance, I assure you," Cosine said to him. "My duty was simply to oversee and finish the construction of the ship. I have some theories as to why Master Hayate has the Linker Key to it, though I will not bore you with the details." Aurion was about to say "let me hear them"; being a scientist and generally an intelligent person all around, he liked to theorize and play mind games. However, his curiosity of the facility was higher.
"I just want to know how this drydock has survived all these years with you and those Constructors." He mentioned as the two "walked" together. "Most things we encounter from your time come in bits and pieces, or if they
are preserved, are usually very small." Aurion easily recalled the Precia Testarossa, Book of Darkness, and JS Incidents very clearly; though he didn't meet the Aces till shortly after Yami no Sho, he had already been studying Lost Logia while a member of TSAB R&D. He almost smiled fondly at those memories...
But that was another time.
"This facility has been kept up by the Constructors," Cosine told him. "Along with the construction of the ship proper, they were designed to maintain the integrity of the facility. Defensive purposes were met with the magic seals and Sentinel units, though you have not seen any of them." The Monitor. "Would you like me to call one?"
"If you wouldn't mind," Aurion answered. The two of them went for the elevator, Aurion stepping inside while Cosine floated off just to the side. "You've shown us most of the ship, but we still haven't seen the shuttle bays. From what I recall, you said that you didn't move the equipment out of them?"
"Unfortunately, no," Cosine said. "Aesthetics were a tertiary priority for us; maximum efficiency and the combat capabilities of the ship were primary. Although construction of the vessel was completed long ago, we have been since working on making the ship's reactors and weapons more efficient and better able to withstand enemy attack. We have been working on that ever since, and are so far satisfied with the product."
"Ease of use?" Aurion asked as the elevator doors opened. "Hayate isn't what you'd call Navy material."
"Mistress Tesla will be on hand, and from what I can gather, she is capable enough to command," Cosine said. "As long as Master Hayate follows her advice, things should be fine. Among other things, the bridge, as you saw, has five stations. The ship is easy to control, and with the ship's on board AI that we have built, there will be no problem in controlling the ship. Only the presence of the Shipmaster is needed; it can virtually run itself otherwise!"
"So why the need for crew?"
"Efficiency, to put simply," Cosine acted as if nodding again. "Despite the advances in AI, humans are far more capable of ingenuity and impulse tactics than computers are. It is a proven fact, and one that my Creators instilled upon me. 'Even the most advanced AI pales to the mind of a living, walking being', they told me. I believe it to this day."
"Glad someone does," Aurion muttered under his breath. Off to the side, another construct showed up, a single blue eye glaring at him. "Oh, is this a Sentinel?"
"Yes, Master Aurion." Cosine confirmed. "This is a Sentinel unit. It runs on solar power and is highly efficient, able to maintain flight for up to four days without needing a recharge. Its primary beam weapon is powerful enough to cut through most Linker Armor-"
"Barrier Jacket," Aurion corrected, though the Monitor completely ignored him.
"-though it drains the battery significantly. If you wish, I can shut it off so you can inspect it better."
"Feel free." Aurion told the construct. Abruptly, the blue eye of the Sentinel turned off, landing at Aurion's feet. Picking it up, Aurion was surprised. "It's light for its size."
"Yes, a Sentinel is approximately twenty kilograms in weight," Cosine said. "It is made out of- Oh, looks like Master Hayate and her Guardian Knights have arrived." Aurion turned his head to look up at the glass windows a level above him. Sure enough, he saw Hayate waving him down, the Wolkenritter in tow. As they made their way to the elevator, the scientist returned his attention to the Sentinel.
"How independent are these?" He asked.
"A Sentinel has a very limited AI, and all Sentinels and Constructors are bound to the Monitor of the area. They are given a set of guidelines, and can act on their own, but they cannot think up new tactics to destroy an enemy; only I can do that for them." Cosine hovered around the Sentinel. "If you like, I can attune this one to your Type-4 Linker Key."
According to Cosine, Devices in its days were called Linker Keys, and they were assigned a Type depending on how advanced its AI was. Type-1 LKs were the equivalent of Storage Devices; Type-2s, Armed; Type-3s, Intelligent; Type-4s, Devices like Almaria; and Type-5s, which were higher than that. Unison Devices were known as Combination-types, and apparently were as rare then as they were now. There were other things - Combat Cyborgs were known as Type-A Constructs and people like the Wolkenritter were known as Type-C Constructs, but the list was far too diverse for even a genius like Aurion to remember.
"Well, if it's okay with her," Aurion commented, lifting the cellphone like Device in the air. "What'll the strain on her be?"
"Minimal at the most," Cosine said. "However, in the case of an emergency, your Linker Key can transfer its program to the Sentinel, allowing preservation until you can give it a new casing."
"Sounds like a plan to me, Aurion-san," The cellphone-shaped Device said. "I say do it."
"...well, if she wants to, then it's a plan." Aurion held Almaria up. "Go for it,"
Cosine "nodded" and began to emit two separate beams of energy; one toward Almaria, the other to the Sentinel. The energy beam seemed to contain information and computer networking programs, and as the Wolkenritter and Hayate walked up, Reinforce Zwei felt something akin to static to humans; a fuzzy charge that filled the air around her. The Unison Device rubbed her arms uncomfortably and sat down on Hayate's shoulder.
"Synchronization complete." Cosine chirped. "You may attempt to command the Sentinel now."
"Right." Aurion nodded. "Almaria, tell it to fly around or something."
There was a slight pause, followed by the formerly-blue eye of the Sentinel lighting up a bright green. The drone lifted up out of Aurion's hands and began to fly in a lazy arc, from the Monitor to Hayate and back again, before coming to a hover next to Aurion's head. "It's... strange." Almaria commented. "It's like, finally having arms and legs; all I have to do is process the information, like someone walking."
"Do you like it?" Aurion asked, watching intently.
"I think I can get used to it." Almaria said. "Hey, watch this."
The Sentinel abruptly turned around and hurled itself at the Wolkenritter, stopping centimeters from Hayate's face and "opening up", rapidly lifting up its pylons to reveal six three-pointed fingers that snapped at her.
Hayate yelped in surprise, eliciting a laugh from Aurion. "Aurion Dauer!" She shouted angrily as the Sentinel flew off. Aurion held up his hands.
"It wasn't me!" He said, a smile plastered on his face. "But it was funny anyway!"
"I swear," Hayate huffed as she and her Guardians walked up to him. "I've half a mind to kick you out an airlock one day."
"Ouch, harsh," Aurion said as Hayate walked by. "Girl's still got a tongue on her." As if on cue, Hayate stuck hers out at Aurion.
"Come on, or we're leaving you behind." Tesla said as she walked by. "Today, we're going to fly the thing!"
"I can't believe I agreed to this," Signum sighed. "You know this is Tesla's idea, right?"
"Somehow, I don't doubt that." Aurion laughed, following the group to the airlock of the ship. With the seal broken, the ship's true colors were easy to see; a mix of whites and grays and purples and blues, done in such a fashion that it almost seemed natural, especially when compared to TSA ships. "Wait, our ride up above knows about this, right?"
"I told them... to
expect something," Hayate winked. "They're in for a surprise, that's for sure!"
"...are you insane? What if they shoot us down?" Aurion resisted the urge to facepalm.
"We'll be fine." Tesla said as the group walked into the airlock. "If they shoot at us, it'd be a good time to test the shielding."
Aurion blinked.
The entire Yagami family has gone batshit... and I'm in for the ride. He smiled at that.
Well, should my life end because of a crazy family, let it be said that I did not die in va-
"Come on!" Hayate shouted at Aurion, grabbing him by the collar and all but forcing him into the ship. Aurion fell in line behind Signum and Agito, putting him roughly in between the Blazing General and Zafira. The group was silent as they followed Cosine to the "Control Room" as he called it. The ship was much "livelier" than it was the night previous, supposedly in anticipation of the ship's impending launch. Constructors and Sentinels passed through the corridors of the ship, completely oblivious to the group that walked amongst them.
"Anticipating something?" Signum asked, watched the constructs mill about.
"Launch preparations," Cosine stated simply. "This will be the first time the engines have been activated since their test activation. I have every available unit on board in anticipation of the launch. Essentially, the machine will provide for you a crew until you can get actual people here." It looked at the Wolkenritter. "I assume you will be substituting as Control Room crew until a more proper one can control it?"
"That's the idea," Zafira nodded. "You mentioned that the AI of the ship will assist us, so there should be little worry."
"We'll try our best to run the ship," Shamal agreed.
"I will assist you the best I can," Cosine told the Wolkenritter. To Tesla, he said, "I trust that you, as a veteran of space operations, will assist Master Hayate?"
"It would be against my nature not to," Tesla said with a smile on her face.
"Very good. Then no problems." Cosine jetted ahead slightly. "I must make other preparations. Do you remember the route to the Control Room?"
"I do," Hayate told it. "If I somehow forget, than Rein-chan remembers, right?"
"Of course! Perfect memory!" Rein smiled. "Rein downloaded the schematics from the Monitor, so there's no way we can get lost."
Hayate nodded to the Monitor, which took that as cue to fly off into the myriad of robots that flew about. The group fanned out as the construct left, allowing the group to walk together as they made their way to the Control Room.
"That thing sure is weird," Vita said.
"You're telling me," Agito said as she watched the robots. "Yesterday, that thing wouldn't shut up for anything."
"Alright now, children," Aurion chided. "That's enough of talking about the nice robot behind his back."
I'm glad it's gone too.
"I'm not a child!" Vita and Agito shouted in unison. The shout caused Vita to wince slightly.
"Ow..." she muttered, putting a hand to her chest suddenly. "That hurt... Shamal?"
"Right here, Vita-chan," Shamal walked over to Vita and put a hand on the small Knight's back. As she began to work healing magic, Aurion had to raise an eyebrow as the group continued walking.
"Ever since that incident eight years ago..." Vita said. "I've been having... problems."
"Don't worry, she's okay," Hayate said, putting a hand on Vita's shoulder. "It's just like a light chest pain, she says, but she's still okay." Hayate laughed. "First time it happened, I thought I was going to have a heart attack! But... as long as Vita's okay, then it's alright."
"It doesn't bother me often," Vita mumbled as the pain subsided and Shamal removed her hand. "But according to Shamal, I have to limit my field time. No more than a couple of hours at the most." she shrugged. "Fortunately most battles I'm in don't last longer than that... except Ariadne..."
"Ariadne?" Aurion had heard the name, but knew little else; he had been relatively out of touch with the group for a while. "Isn't that a world on the Rim? "Vita was deployed there, about six years ago," Hayate said, thinking. "...something happened there." Both adults looked at Vita, who had shifted her view up with her hands crossed behind her head, lost in thought. "She doesn't speak about it, but whatever happened, affected her... I worry about that, but what can I do?"
"Nanoha-san was there, as well," Signum recalled. "...as I understand, it's one of the reasons behind her state of mind."
"Ariadne..." Aurion muttered. "I recall some people from the Tech department were assigned there some years back... I think it was about six. They never came back." He looked at Tesla. "What about you, Tesla?"
"I was nowhere near Ariadne," the Sky Knight admitted. "However, Chrono-kun's fleet was there, from what I recall. As well as Admiral Carter's." she nodded. "Apparently, whatever happened there, the TSAB doesn't want anyone to know about. It's not even in the database if I recall, and Chrono said that he'd tell me, but then both of us would have to die."
"A Bureau-wide coverup?" Hayate looked at Tesla. "Of a
planet?"
"Yes, ma'am," Tesla nodded. "I even tried looking it up. Any mention of the planet is simply wiped from the record. The only people allowed to say anything about it are... well, those guys."
"The Order." Zafira said to Aurion. "You know them."
Aurion nodded slowly. "Those guys, huh..." he said to himself. "Still running around, I see... still alive."
Silence fell upon the group as they walked. Only the sounds of drones whirring about and the occasional door sliding open filled their ears as they continued along, down the network of corridors (some sections deliberately confusing, to deter invaders) to the center of the ship, where the Control Room - synonymous with a TSA ship's Bridge - rested. Entering from a side door, the group beheld for the second time the layout of the room.
It was rather large, especially for a Bridge. Instead of the crew being spread out over a small area, they were instead situated in the same circular area, which was located atop a ramp in the middle of the room. Holographic displays flickered to life in the circle, bringing up monitors which flashed several languages before attuning itself to its users, automatically becoming easy to understand. The walls of the control room shimmered before giving way to a display of the area immediately surrounding the ship, as if the group were standing in the middle of the hangar itself.
"...it didn't do this last time," Hayate observed. "I'm guessing this is what the Monitor was talking about."
"I suppose," Signum said. "Well, then, let's get moving."
"Sounds like someone's getting excited," Tesla said in a sing-song voice as the group made their way to the ramp.
"Nonsense," Signum retorted. "I just want to get this over with."
Upon reaching the top, several chairs rose up from the floor; two in the center, and one for each monitor. Hayate paused for a second, staring at the chair as it automatically swiveled to greet her. Gripping
Schwertkreuz tightly, she couldn't help but feel both excited and nervous. Whatever was about to happen could be... amazing. The Wolkenritter and Aurion paused behind her as she took two deep breaths. "Well," she told them. "Let's get this started."
"Alright." Aurion nodded.
"By your word, Mistress." Signum said. The group fanned out into the separate chairs. Aurion took the seat immediately to the left, and Signum the one to the right. Zafira moved to the one directly in front. Tesla walked over to the one adjacent Hayate's and sat down in it. A navigation screen was brought up before her that swiveled with the chair.
"I'm sorry," Hayate said to Vita and Shamal as she walked up to the captain's chair. She gingerly put a hand on it. "But it looks like there aren't any more positions for you..."
"It's fine," Shamal said, shaking her head. "I'm a doctor, Hayate-chan, not Bridge crew."
"I'm not good for that stuff either," Vita intoned, crossing her arms. "I've got no patience for space. Give me the sky any day." Hayate looked at the two Wolkenritter and nodded. She looked down at the chair for a few seconds before finally turning about and sitting in it.
As if on cue, a holographic image of 16807 Cosine Phi appeared on the edge of the chair's right arm. "Greetings, Masters!" It said cheerfully. "Preparations have been completed here. Master Hayate, if you would be so kind as to start the ship with your Linker Key, we can be underway!"
"...All right." Hayate said, detaching
Schwertkreuz from her necklace and staring at it in her palm. On the chair's left arm, a slot opened up, revealing a place that appeared to be an exact fit for the Device. Swiveling her chair about to face the front, she took another breath. "Everyone ready?"
"Everything's good here," Aurion replied as he began to touch parts of the holo-monitor.
This thing's sensor network is absolutely unbelievable!
"Ready when you are," Zafira said as he fiddled with the joystick-shaped objects on either arm of his chair.
A fighter, perhaps... but a capital ship?
"I'm prepared as well," Signum answered as an overlay came up on her monitor.
...Fire Control? Weapons? Hm... how appropriate.
"I'm ready as well...
Kanchou." Tesla said with a smile. Hayate nodded.
"Well... let's get this show started." she told herself. Lifting her Device above the slot, she said, "Here we go!" and connected the Device with the slot.
Schwertkreuz sank in the slot for a few centimeters before its black areas began to glow blue.
"
Linker Key has been activated." A voice said on the PA. "
Captain's DNA is confirmed. Preparing to launch the White Tempest."
There was a buckle across the ship as engines spooled to life after so many years of being inactive. "
Type-X Reactors and engines, active."
On the outside of the ship, the giant restraining bolts that kept the ship in place began to unscrew. "
Release primary and secondary lock bolts." The bolts finished unscrewing, the giant cranes they were attached to moving away from the vessel as it began to hover under its own power. "
Activating all systems."
On each screen, a corner in the bottom right of each monitor displayed a set of "OFFLINE" messages. Each one switched to "ACTIVE", while a new screen appeared before Hayate, displaying overrides and other controls befitting a ship's captain. "
All systems Nominal. White Tempest is fully active and awaiting orders from the Captain." Hayate looked at Tesla.
"Taking her out?" Hayate asked. Tesla nodded.
"Zafira, don't break the ship." She said to the Guardian Beast. "We just got it!"
"It'll be fine." Zafira muttered as he put one hand on the ship's throttle and another on the flight stick.
"All right, back the ship out of the hangar!" Hayate ordered. Simultaneously, the hangar doors opened, revealing another part of the drydock facility that they hadn't seen; an expansive area in which rows of other hangars were lined up, the doors open and the bays devoid of anything but the occasional Sentinel.
A prompt flashed up on Zafira's screen. "PILOT REQUEST ASSISTANCE" it blinked. Zafira touched that part of the screen, to which the screen then flashed "ASSISTANCE REQUESTED. INITIATING TAKEOFF PROCEDURE".
The ship began to move.
Backing up slowly, the ship inched slowly out of the hangar, leaving behind the place it was built. Like an expert pilot, the ship slowly made its way into the expansive middle area and began to slowly spin to the right, facing the exit doors as they opened, far on the other end of the hangar... and probably the other end of the moon itself. The ship's thrusters ignited a bright blue and propelled itself forward, past the other bays and straight for the void of space. The ship picked up velocity and activated its outer lights; motes of blues and reds that dotted the ship in particular areas.
The ship exited the hangar bay and granted Zafira control of the ship. Pulling back on the throttle, Zafira turned the ship about and slowly made it fly off toward where the
Normandy was parked on the surface. "Aurion-san, can you open a channel to the frigate?"
"Hayate, with this system, I could open a channel to the other end of the galaxy in real time," Aurion said as he typed in the appropriate commands. "Channel open, feel free to say something."
"
Normandy, this is Brigadier General Yagami. Don't be alarmed; we found this yesterday and have pretty much had it given to us. I would like for you to escort us back to the TSAB ship in orbit around the planet."
"
Normandy, roger that," The ship's XO said. "We'll follow you close behind, General. Is Rear Admiral Tesla with you?"
"Right next to her," Tesla answered.
"Roger that,"
Normandy's XO affirmed. "We'll be right behind you, Admiral."
The
White Tempest waited as the
Normandy lifted off and took a position next to the much larger ship. Both vessels then began a course for the Assault Cruiser in orbit around the Uninhabited world. Aurion hailed the ship and let them know of the approach, but the crew of the TSA ship was nontheless surprised when a vessel nearly twice their size rumbled up and over them, circled around, and began to assume the same orbit with them.
A few minutes later, both ships would make the jump to Dimensional Space, with the TSAB HQ as their destination.
