But if we're taking that track then what he's doing is still perfectly fine since, again, most of the people still support the princess. If there turns out to be other circumstances later on then the story changes, but for now the people who ruled for 150 years still have the high ground.

His options at this point are to help the princess or go his own way, and the first offers far greater benefits at no greater risk to him than the second.

The other side he has no knowledge of, no connection to, and has no reason to trust or believe him? That's even dumber than the pacifist shit. They don't even need his power for themselves at this point, they'd just try and kill him in his sleep.

This isn't even an argument. The amount of effort just to get the other side to talk to him, much less support him like the princess would, completely outweighs the effort of shooting a bunch of old dudes in the head from a mile away.

And what does that get him? At best they'd give him some money and kick him out, more likely they'll try to kill him anyway to take credit for it.

And there's no way they'd give him the same level of support she would if he helped get the kingdom back.

You said it yourself, it's an unreturnable debt. Any kind of resources or manpower he'd need would be at his disposal as the hero who saved the kingdom.

There isnt any kind of equivalent possibility on the other side.

Yeah, I already mentioned that one. But the princess route gives him far more potential benefits with no real increase in risk.

In fact compared to constantly fighting monsters, fighting for a few days or weeks and then not having to again would be less risky overall.

Just admit you want to see him betray the princess for the lulz
