Spiral has some fantastic mind games but unfortunately it doesn't have an ending. So I'd say give it a try for the mind games but don't expect a great anime all around.

Umineko no Naku Koro ni fits, contains horror and supernatural.

Higurashi no Naku Koro ni (and the sequel Higurashi Kai) is more puzzling for the viewers at first, but it will eventually become for its characters too, later on.

Try Mononoke and its llcensed predecessor Goblin Cat. The protagonist is a medicine-seller who also exorcises demons. There are half-a-dozen stories in these two shows. In each case the medicine seller must determine three important characteristics of the demon he faces en route to exorcising it.

As you mentioned any scenario, here are two mind game heavy animes based on baseball and gambling respectively:

One Outs - Baseball anime that is highly interesting and focuses on mind games specifically. It may not be very believable but makes for a very entertaining watch... and that's coming from someone from the UK. I've never watched baseball or had much interest in it so I was surprised by how enjoyable I found this.

Kaiji - Another great show that is similar to the above with many mind games. It features such simple looking games that will surprisingly keep you on edge as the protagonist tries to win.

Hmm, Johan in Monster's pretty damn smart, but it might not be what you're looking for... He uses his brain to torment people. It's a mystery/horror/drama kind of series, where the protagonist's going after Johan, who's a serial killer. They're both quite central characters.

Lost+Brain is about as close to Yagami Light as I've seen in a manga, sadly it is still ongoing.

Akagi, the hero is crazy. It's a mah-jong anime, you should try 1-2 episodes!

Most definitely Akagi. I'm on my third re-watch right now.
