I know science fiction is a diverse genre, but I'm hung up on the impression that this wasn't very sci-fi at all. It just felt like the setting was more important as a plot device to get the two boys to meet, in which case it could have been a western for all that it matters. Quote:
This show is a noitamina character piece. If somehow, the story ends up being more than that....I'll give it a second look.

You seriously want the show to answer all your questions in ep 1? Do they really need to show how Mouse escaped through the bars to impress you? (He might have found another route.) I know that must be a major plot hole or something. It's like somebody on the Disney board complaining about how Flynn didn't die when he fell off the cliff in Tangled.

I'm just expressing my opinion, and you clearly disagree. Let's leave it at that. In regards to the escape, actually yes I did want some explanation on that particular thing. He's bleeding heavily and cornered. Would it have hurt to show how he got out of that? It doesn't have to be fancy, maybe he realized he could slip through one of the bars. But showing him facing a dead end and then showing him on the run later is a bit jarring. It certainly didn't seem like a moment of foreshadowing (flashback of how he escaped, using it later to get back in). How did he escape....sea turtles? Quote:

I thoroughly enjoyed the episode as it is one of a few anime that had a main character as a boy and it's not a shonen. Not having a high expectation certainly left me with positive impressions. I liked the lead characters. They came across as genuinely likable while still naive. The pace of the episode was just right too, one thing I didn't like about Deadman Wonderland was that everything happened so fast even though it guess that was its purpose. I expect good things in the future and eventually explain all the circumstances.

That house must have some excellent soundproofing, if Mouse's yells didn't attract Shion's mother's attention. Or maybe Shion just loves randomly screaming so much that everyone else just pays him no heed... either way, the intercom scenes reminded me a bit of Fractale's "technology puts distance between family members" theme, though to a much more realistic degree.
And what is it with futuristic anime utopias all using English on signs? This has bothered me ever since I saw Ergo Proxy way back when. Language aside, the city designs themselves looked pretty good. |

There was no hidden meaning, and I didn't say the show was bad, I simply found the setting uninspired and most of the focus was on the two leads. It just didn't feel very "science fiction", although I suppose that point of view is contestable. I also made it a point to mention that if the show ends up being more than just the relationship between these two I'd take a second look. Orion says there's more sci-fi to come, I'll take his word for it. There's only so much time and a number of interesting shows this season. Gotta be a little picky, at least initially. ![]()

Something tells me things are going to spice up really quickly in the next episode with that short scene near the ending with Shion's mother saying "The Ministry of Peace?" while on the phone. Either way, it has a decent starting so far although I do take side with Solace on occasions about how generic this anime feels.

An excellent plot and a very nice animation. I really hope that the BL be reduced to a minimum. Anyway, I suspect Shion are not interested in that kind of relationships due his attitude when the girl kisses him, but it can also mean something else ???

They're the Newspeak names of the Ministries from 1984:
Minipax is the Ministry of Peace, which specializes in war. Miniplenty is the Ministry of Plenty, which specializes in rationing. Minitrue is the Ministry of Truth, which specializes in propaganda. Miniluv is the Ministry of Love, which specializes in torture. |

![]() Also a theory about how he escaped the bars (although it's vague). The skills that he demonstrated could have possibly helped him when he could have taken them by surprise? Just throwing something out.
