But it's most interesting that 5 GB of the Windows folder is of those from the winsxs subfolder.... And after doing a bit of research, the general consensus on the winsxs subfolder is that it can be deleted, but unadvisable to do so. So what's your take on it ? |

I have been using a 30GB partition for Win7 and another 30GB for programmes. Each of the partition has around 10GB of free space. The remaining of the drive has a few partitions for data and linux stuff.
So far this setup works fine for me. But then I am not a gamer and only use my PC to watch anime and do office work.

I think when the service pack comes out, there is going to be a Service Pack cleaning tool like in Vista where you can remove the old system files that are older than the service pack provides. From what I heard, 7 SP1 is only going to be security and bug fixes and not that many feature additions.

Also if u have enough space on both drives u can back each drive to each other, makes recovery a lot easier as long as it isn't the controller that went and decided to chew up data on both drives!

Though much of winsxs is basically backup, deletion of certain folders could lead to incompatibility issues. Compression is reportedly out of question, too, as they are prone to interfere with updates. I can see why people would want to get rid of winsxs but in doing so you might break something and there is no rule of thumb that applies to all winsxs denizens and can say, without a heartbeat of a doubt, what is safe to trashcan and what is not. I'd say play on the safe side and leave the folder alone - just uninstall whatever software you don't need and relocate unused/redundant stuff to either a backup drive or a removable storage device. More on Vista/W7 winsxs here.
