I'm sorry for sounding like such a noob, but I'm at wits end here. Is there a scanlation group who's scanlating the novels? If there is, where can I obtain the goods? I've tried desparately to try to find it, and failed miserably.

I haven't heard of any groups/people working on the novels. Novel fan-translations are rare for the same reasons that visual novel fan-translations are relatively rare: LOTS OF TEXT. There's about 100,000 characters in each Shana novel.

They're novels, not manga. In other words, the books are pages full of text, not pages full of pictures that make us say 'ohmygodshanaishot.'

Well, there are a *few* service pictures of Shana scattered in the novels, if you really absolutely need that kind of thing. ;o

I don't really give a damn about the pictures. I care more of the story line. I was hoping that someone out there would translate it, like boku-tachi is doing for Full Metal Panic. Ah well. Maybe some die hard fans that knows both english and japanese will pick it up soon.

Novels are definitely great. I'll definitely pick storyline and plot over action and pictures anyday. Sure, pictures are pleasing to the eyes, but what we need is rich content. :D

The novels usually feature several full page colored illustrations of memorable scenes that's going to happen in the volume, and then throughout the novel, you'll also get an illustration every few dozen pages or so. Although there's not much (it's a novel after all), they're always a pleasure to look at.

For example, you don't see the Sakai Yuuji-style Lolicon Grapple... I mean, hug, in the anime:

is ther any manga beyond the anime that takes over where the anime left out or do it end after the anime ?

zalas
2006-04-17, 20:04
Shana is based on a light novel series, not a manga series. The anime deviates from the novels near the end to create an "ending" but the novels are still continuing as we speak.

Shouldn't this be in a different forum? Or merged into the Shana Manga+Novel thread?

I totally forgot about this thread >.<

Anyway here's my post from SnS anime thread:

Yay Yay :D

Volume 2 of the seinen manga Shakugan no SHANA will be released on 20/6/2006 :D (the manga is serialized in the seinen manga magazine Dengeki Daioh)

It will also include a limited edition booklet called: GRIMOIRE (Format: B6, 108 pages)

Correct me if I'm wrong: from what I could understand the booklet will include some illustrations of Shana drawn by PEACH-PIT Yay Yay :D

BTW.. did you say the anime ENDS the manga / novels ? so there isint anyting after it? or am i wrong ?No, the novels and manga are on-going, and there's still a movie to come, so the anime doesn't end anything. What zalas meant was that the anime series has a sort of "ending" in it, but it's not actually the end of the series/story.

By the way, for the curious, volume 2 of the manga with Grimoire (http://www.amazon.co.jp/exec/obidos/ASIN/4840234965/250-5328391-2961050?%5Fencoding=UTF8) came in today. In case people are wondering what is "Grimoire" and what's in it, it's basically an "extras" book, with guest illustrations, guest comics, and a few short stories. One of the bigger "names" on the guest list is of course Peach-Pit, who contributed a rather salacious Shana illustration. :heh: The guest comics are all very short, and range widely in quality. All in all, of course, it's not a bad bonus for only 320 Yen extra. The manga volume itself contains chapters 8 to 15.

I forgot about this thread >.<

Anyway I added the covers (which I already mentioned them in the other threads) of SnS manga volume 2 regular edition and volume 2 with Grimoire to this thread :)

Also I added the latest light novel volume that got out recently SnS S --> Shakugan no SHANA volume S.

That makes it 14 volumes out of Shakugan no SHANA light novel; volumes 1-12, volume 0 and volume S. (the order of their publication is in the first post of this thread, including the covers of the light novels and the manga).

Volume 13 of the light novel :) has been released since September 10th, 2006

September 10th, 2006 is my 26 birthday :D thank you MediaWorks for releasing the 13th volume of the light novel on my birthday :D

In volume 13 a Na.. Na.. Naked Shana  (according to a comment)

Ok I have to read this LOL

Edit:

I added the cover of volume 13 to the first post of this thread, and of course I maintained their order in the same order they were published (volume 13 was published after volume S, so volume 13's cover was put after the cover of volume S).

I haven't checked recently....And the manga is gonna be licenced to TokyoPop sometime soon or so I've heard.....and the release of a US version sometime in 2007.......As for the Shakugan no Shana movie this Spring 2007 ^_^ Hoped that helped xD....

on the viz website, it says that the first novel and vol 1 of the manga will be released on april 17th, 2007 for $9.99 and 200 pages ea

Now what I want to know is, was the text large in the light novel? I'm just hoping I'm not looking forward to some big bold text expanded through the 200 pages for 10$. I want something that goes in depth. Anyone have an idea?

I think the 15 novel is going to be the last, acording to the events of the 14 novel

I do hope not, but consider the latest development its most likely, unless another LvMAX boss is throw into the game. I really dont want to know how the ending plays out...

Even through with the light hearted scences at the times, for some reason after this event i see Shana and Yuji both dies, and Yoshida-chan either dies or all lone..., Through I'll be more glad with the happy harem ending and have Yoshida chan to become a flamehaze to add to the fun

All in all its a long way til next volume :(

As for the novel be long and such, I guess kinda, even when the flashbacks are well done like a standalone story in vol. 10 it still took a full volume...

Prolouge(Blue colour=Yuji)

From far and deep bottom from my heart, came a voice.

"Denizens of the Crimson Realm that came from a "unreachable world" or "another world",were comsume human's energy source----"power of existance" to maintain themselves at this world, and cause the human become "never exist before"."

"I know!!"

I replied it with no hesitation.

Without my attention,"The darkness of myself" had stand in front of me.

The voice continue came out from there, just like situated in a spacious cave, the voice was along with some echo.

"The Denizens robbed the "power of existance",caused some incredible phenonmenon and continue to abuse this world with their abilities. They didn't care about the statement which "The unbalance of the existance will cause distortion and bring disaster to both world",they just ignored it.

"I know!!"

I still replied it with no hesitation.

The image of "The darkness of myself" swayed a bit.

The voice became lonely yet sound piercingly cold.

"Some strong Dezinens--"Lord Crimson" that notice this crisis, decided to fight against their compatriots who were too self indulgence. They let human "feel" the existance of the Dezinens,in order to revenge for their loves that being "eaten" by Dezinens--the human offer themselve include their own existance as medium for the "Lord" and gain the special abilities and strength that they need."

"I know!!That is Flame Haze,isn't it?"

After hearing a those unnecesssary facts,I said the answer immediately.

Suddenly,I found that "The darkness of myself" was exist in a plane form.

That lonely voice didn't seems to be care about it,and continue with a acknowlegde tone,

"The Flame Haze can detect the Dezinens due to their ability to sence the distortion. In order to avoid Hlame Haze, the Dezinens used the remain of "power of existance" that they comsume to create "torch" for replacement of their victims.when time goes on,the power of existance inside the "torch" will fade away, that human will lose his status, residence and even his existance gradually......totally vanish in the end."

"I know!!Furthermore,I'm one of them."

In the lonely and sorrowful conversation,I added a little anger feeling form myself.

Once again,I suddenly notice that "The darkness of myself" was just only a shadow that reflect form a water surface.

The lonely voice suddenly become more emotional, like a tiny flame spread out rapidly.

"You wish that--"One day this war will end."--You were not just simply waiting or hoping, but you desire to face it--That is "because only you can accomplish it"."

"......"

I totally mute.At the same time, I aslo felt some presentiment for the next question.

The shadow of "The darkness of myself" was far and deeply.

His voice now was full with passionate.

"What will you do?"

"......"

Unanswerable.I still lack of ability to answer this question.

"The darkness of myself"slowly become more and more closer.

Without an alert, the voice came in front of me.

"What will you do?"

"......"

I still unable to answer the shadow that already face to face with me.

I switch my view to the direction below the shadow, deeply inside in water.

Again,I still heard a demand yet threaten voice.

"Where and which path you will choose,Yuji Sakai?"

"I will......"

Suddenly the alarm clock ring and interrupt the Yuji's dream.

This moment,Yuji notice that he didn't lose the memory about the dream he had just now.

Meanwhile, the heart that shouldn't be exist,is pumping inside his chest fiercely.
I try translate prolouge,my english was 3rd grade in my country,so feel free to complain.

Typing Blah... Blah... Blah... will give:

Blah... Blah... Blah...
And while I understand that you're excited about the latest development, please post it in the Shakugan no SHANA novel and manga (http://forums.animesuki.com/showthread.php?t=26560) thread instead of here. This thread is for the anime. You might also want to edit your previous 3 posts with spoiler tags.

Um...this is the novel and manga thread, and you just linked to page one of this thread

Anyone care to improve the wikipedia articles on the Shankugan no Shana Manga, and especially the Light Novels? Hopefully someone on this thread read them! These articles have very little sumarry of where the literature diverges from the anime and could use alot more information:

I have a question (after reading through this thread to make sure it wasn't answered and checking out the wiki briefly).

Is the manga just a manga version of the novels or is it a separate side-story? I see no purpose in buying the manga if it's just the light novel in manga form, but if it's actually got a different story (similar to what I've heard the Scrapped Princess novel has) then I'd like to pick it up.

I bought two volumes of the manga. Didn't read the novels but the manga storyline follows the anime, so I would assume it's the same story as the novel as well.

The novel seems to be following the anime, so my guess is they're the same. Safely skipping then. :)

From my understanding, SnS' novel was the base for everything else.

Same way Slayers and Haruhi were Novel Expats in regards to anime.

From my understanding, SnS' novel was the base for everything else.

Same way Slayers and Haruhi were Novel Expats in regards to anime.Correction, I realize now that what I said was ambiguous. I realize that the novels were the source - I'm going to read the novels no matter what (well, unless it turns out I don't like them or something). I only meant that I was going to skip the manga since it seems to be identical to the novel. I'm really only interested in the manga if, like I said, it's different than the novel. If I wanted to see the novel with (more) pictures, I would watch the anime. ;)

I've now finished the first novel, and I actually enjoyed it a fair amount. Part of that could be because I've forgotten some of the moments at the beginning of the anime, but I thought it did a pretty good job of representing Yuji and Shana's thoughts better. There seemed to be a good deal less ambiguity involved. Also, Alastor didn't come off quite as stiff as I remembered him in the anime.

EDIT: Missing pages added. XD;

Which brings me to ask the question. For those who've read the v14 already--or for those that know somehow....

Since I scoured around this forum on the SnS topics, I saw that the user piku had posted a spoiler about Yuji turning into the last boss of the Bal Masqué (in page 89; the SnS Anime Discussion thread). I can't read Japanese (lol, the obvious.) so I'd like someone to explain that one, if possible. >_>;

Boy I actually bought light volume 14. But even with my handy, or not so handy pocketJapanese dictionary....and my impossible-to-look-up-a-character kanji dictionary, that small font, small leaf-sized100-200 page novel is unreadable. Only in Japanese can you be illiterate while still having a variety of dictionaries at your disposal! (...well maybe also Chinese...:( )

Oh here's a hint though: On the first page theres alot of talk about blowing a white hankerchief. Whatever that means....

The cover is the same image of the original Japanese cover. I do believe ViZ will keep the original Japanese covers for the NA releases, unless.... :twitch:

Well, I finally got the novel (ViZ) with the manga in the mail today. I've yet to read them though, due to schoolwork. >_>;

However, I flipped through the novel and was somewhat amused that ViZ cut off part of the color image with Yuji waking up to find Shana sleeping in the bed. XD [EDIT: Yeah, the B&W image of her changing got cut out as well.] (Guess they decided that it was a bad idea to show readers Shana in her underwear. :uhoh: Pity for the fans that liked the fanservice? Haha.... >_>")

When I can, I'll scan some sample pages to show you guys (just how well did ViZ translate this? ;o). I also read from somewhere (Was it this thread? Too lazy go back to check.) that there was a typo in the translation by ViZ so I intend to read it through to see if it's true. D:

They cut out some illustrations from the novel? Noooo~ D:
Half the fun in the novel, IMO, is the great artwork by Noizi Ito (Noiji? I always forget). And of course, censorship is bad. But it's not new to Viz.

I still need to order both the manga and novels, but the bookstores around here don't have them. Oddly enough, both have manga sections but most of the light novels published by Tokyopop and Viz are nowhere to be seen, go figure.

i bought the Shana manga today and yet to read it. However i have a question.

I want to know which one is better, the manga or the novel? I know the difference. Novel is less pictures with more words while manga is the opposite. But ..does the novel go longer than the manga in 1 volume?

I dont know if i made the right choice or not in buying the manga version >.> I'm not that experience in it.

I asked the store owner and the expression he gives me is *blank* -___-.

Well, one volume of novel should go further into the story than one volume of manga... I don't wanna take responsible if it doesn't so don't count me on it though. I have bought the book and have yet to read it.

@piku: I don't see the illustration of shana in underwear either (damn ;_; ) ... As for Shana sleeps in Yuji's bed one, I see the color'd illustration from one of the first few pages

I would say the novel, because the it's the source of everything else, both the mangá and the anime are based off the novel.

It's like a movie that is based off a book. The movie may be great but, IMO, nothing would surpass the book.

But that is just what I think.

I was pretty sure the bookstores near me like Barnes&Noble (http://barnesandnoble.com/) and Borders (http://www.bordersstores.com/) wouldn't have it the first day out [Apr. 17] (I'm impatient. XD). ahh Toronto. I suggest you might want to check downtown for the anime shops on the Spadina-Dundas intersection. In North-East of it, theres an animeshop called Anime Xtreme that sells anime stuff.

In South-West of the intersection, theres a chinese mall there, NOT AT the intersection but the mall down south abit. Its on the second floor. The name of it is called Kikiwai.

For Kikiwai, heres their site, you can call them for the location and what kinds of stuff they have currently: http://www.kikiwai.com/

For Anime Xtreme, heres their site as well, the site is closed when theres a mini-map where you can actually see where its located in the area: http://store.animextreme.ca/

I hope it helps:)

Go to a nihonmachi to find the novels in Japanese for about 6 dollars. (They'd be about 3-4 dollars in Japan, but with shipping and handling...)

The novels are impossbile to read though...without pictures those multi-hundred page books are incomprehensible. They also seem to be drawn out with elaborate descriptions meant to throw off the reader. If anyone read the translated Crest of the Stars light novel then you understand what I'm talking about.

That's weird. I didn't bother checking the Toronto stores, but according to chapters.ca most of their stores in Vancouver have copies in stock, one of them even has 8. So I can't imagine Toronto locations not stocking any. I just ordered mine online though, the free shipping is great, they do partial ships and it usually only takes 2 or 3 days. And on new items I usually get the manga a week before the store gets around to shelving them. :eyespin:

Does anyone have any idea how long Viz is going to take between novel releases? Educated guesses are fine if they haven't announced that.

The manga will take awhile.... it's safe to say since volume 3 only came out in Japan on April 27th... >_>; The next release is in October with volume 2 of both the manga and novel. I'm not sure of how long it would take for VIZ to translate the novels after that. I hope it's not too long though--but I'm guessing 2 or 3 volumes each year at the pace they're going at.

Hello everyone. I'm new in here, and just "discovered" Shakugan no Shana a month ago. I'm now a big fan, in fact, I already have the 24 eps, the Special, and the mini-specials (all 4) subbed by Eclipse/Static-Subs.
Right now in using uTorrent to get the RAW novels (until now, I have 8), from MOE. btw, does he post here?
Well, what I wanted to discuss is the possible release date for Shakugan no Shana XV. Acording to the previous release dates, is possible that the release date will be next June 10th.

Right now in using uTorrent to get the RAW novels (until now, I have 8), from MOE. btw, does he post here?
Well, what I wanted to discuss is the possible release date for Shakugan no Shana XV. Acording to the previous release dates, is possible that the release date will be next June 10th.
Sources (http://www.mediaworks.co.jp/users_s/d_hp/i/bunko.html) seem to indicate that it may be August 10th.

Geez, this thread is so dead. :twitch:

I said I'd scan a few pages of the novel here awhile ago so.. uh, here are the first few pages. I don't intend to scan the whole book, though. [Might consider a PDF... but don't count on it too much.] The ViZ Media watermark was put there intentionally by me, except for the back cover, for... um, copyright? :x

<snip>
Prologue: One (http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v643/crazyotaku/others/sns-en_s07.jpg), Two (http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v643/crazyotaku/others/sns-en_s08.jpg)
<snip>

Is it just me, or do the translations seem a bit off/watered down?

As for the "watering down" thing... I can't really say since I can't read Japanese (much to my dismay. >_>).

Any specific sentences or references that seemed watered down?
Original:
受験や将来について深刻ぶる時期は、遥か未来にある。
Viz's translation:
Some part of his brain knew another exam was coming up, but it seemed like the distant future, and he wasn't too worried.

The original is saying that things like entrance examinations (for college, presumably) and times that will be important to his future were still far off in the future. The Viz version dumbs it down to "another exam" and adds in explicit interpretation, like "Some part of his brain knew..." and "and he wasn't too worried," where the meaning would've come across implicitly anyway.

Original:
おっとりした誇りある専業主婦である母・千《ち》草《ぐさ》と、学校から徒歩二十分ほどの一戸建てで二人暮 らし。
Viz's translation:
... Yuji alone with this doting mother. A gentle soul, Chigusa maintained their small home with pride. And every morning Yuji made the twenty-minute walk to school.

The first half of the original says that Chigusa, Yuji's mother, is a gentle and proud full-time homemaker. Nowhere is "doting" mentioned. The second part of the sentence says that they live together in a house (by itself, as opposed to a condo or apartment) that's around a 20 minute walk to school. The Viz translation here made explicit that Yuji walks to school, as opposed to the original, the purpose of which was to give the distance their house was located from Yuji's school and properly establish the setting.

---

All throughout the prologue, these things keep popping up. It would seem that the person at Viz was deliberately removing details that he deemed inconsequential and then adding in explicit interpretations as opposed to letting the reader derive the implied meaning. It makes the story feel a lot more childish, as if the "writer" were holding your hand and taking you through the story in small, gentle steps.

Hmm.... I did think the book in general was written rather oddly. Not the whole thing but snippets here and there. When I looked at the copyright/credit page, I was kind of surprised and kind of... "what?".

Translated by Yuki Yoshioka & Cindy H. Yamauchi

The VIZ editor [for this novel] must've made some adjustments to the book when the translation was done or an error on the translators' part. Of course, I'm not sure. Sometimes these things are done to make the book suitable to the reader. Though I don't agree with that saying often. It'd defeat the purpose of translating if the sentence is changed from the original meaning, doesn't it? :eyebrow:

That reminds me... did anyone read this review (http://www.animenewsnetwork.com/review/shakugan-no-shana/gn-1/by-carlo-santos) at ANN? :dots: The whole thing isn't bad but...

Hrm... a quick google showed that they also worked on the Hayate the Combat Butler manga localization. I wonder how Viz credits their translators. As far as I know, they usually have one translator, one rewriter and one editor, but sometimes the translator can do her own rewriting. My conclusion is that it was either intentional for content and target audience, or maybe it was just the person further down the pipe not understanding what the previous person actually meant. Oh well. Let's hope some of these other novel translations are better...

By the way, Dynzel, do you have the rest of the credits for volume 1?

There's not much for the crediting. It's like every other novel you read in the States, IMO. Here (http://img240.imageshack.us/img240/7734/snsncrqa7.jpg).

They're also working on the manga: (too lazy to scan from the manga)

And how much have the Manga acctually covered? Everything in the anime + more? Halfway through the anime? And how much have the Anime covered in the Novel?

I'm not sure about the exact details, but I believe the manga has been more faithful as an adaptation than the anime. The anime have done some reorganizations (like pushing Margerie up to appear in the Friagne arc and pushing Tenpa Jyousai back to the first season's finale).

And how much have the Manga acctually covered? Everything in the anime + more? Halfway through the anime? And how much have the Anime covered in the Novel?
The third volume of the manga is just a wee bit after the Friagne arc. The first season of the anime has incorporated plot elements from as far up as the ninth novel.

Maybe the anime may have slight changes over the novel, but comparing the manga with the anime, you may find anywhere (mainly in Wikipedia) that the anime was way more appreciated than the manga is being.

This is just my opinion.

Certainly, that appears to be what my research has indicated (I actually wrote much of that section of the Wikipedia article ;)). Although the section only takes from two sources (ANN and AnimeOnDVD), so I don't really know what the general consensus is. If anyone has any other review sources, please contribute them to the article. :)

Now if you're interested in my own opinion, I think the manga is better than the anime. It's a lot funnier than the anime (especially the end of the Friagne arc in volume 3) and is a bit more laid-back. I like the art as well and Shana is really moe in some scenes. :p

Yes, there are translated ones for traditional Chinese, I'm quite sure. I don't know about simplified though.

I don't think so. I only listed the two differences that I know of. I believe it otherwise follows the novel quite well. Sure it skips a unimportant things here and there, but whatever.

I'd prefer the manga as well. I like what the artist did with Yuji's hair, despite the noticeable difference from Noizi's original design. And Shana... well. moé to the max? >_>" lol. I pretty much like the art in it.

Honestly, I'm not that fond of the anime as a whole. One difference I didn't like from the anime was the ending of the first novel. (Though I suppose that's why the movie was made.... but still.) Would've been nice to see Friagne blown away by Alastor's enormous form. But I guess I'll have to wait for the movie to see that.

I like the manga's artwork as well but it seemed to escape the original feel of Noizi Ito's illustrations, it felt overly cute at times. One of the reasons why I prefer how the characters are drawn in the anime.

I like the manga a little better than the anime though, even though I preferred some of the anime's add-ons.

The soundtrack and good animation almost made me lean toward the anime version too, but then the manga had that awesome Friagne battle (http://img239.imageshack.us/img239/4237/03098nc8.png) (atmoshpere of "OH SHI-"...). That alone made me favor it more, because it didn't mix some of the content around like the anime did.

The anime had some nice add-ons though.

Haha, my question exactly. I just finished watching the first season and it definitely got me interested in the whole series. I'll be buying the english Novel and the Manga somewhere around this week, although I'm very wary of the 6-month+ delay between releases. It's been three months since ViZ released the first volumes for the two, and yet we still have almost three months of wait for the second volume for both.

I don't know about most of you guys, but I'm not willing to wait for five years+ to know what happens at the end of the story. I'll be definitely working on my Japanese lessons from now on, it's so damn worth it, for a variety of reasons.

Is this the last light novel in the series? I'm sorta t icked because I loaned the last light novel I had to a friend before I'd finished it (the guy neither read nor returned it to me)-not that it matters since the novel seems thick, wordy and utterly complicated if you've been studying Japanese for just one year.

I can't read anything, but just from the cover I'm guessing we'll have a happy ending after all. As much as it looks like Shana, she appears to be even chibier ( is that even a word? ) on that pic, and a couple of wild ideas run through my mind, but I don't want to spoil the fun of waiting and seeing. The clothing also seems off-track with most of the other covers, which gives me the idea she goes back to being a normal girl.

But what the heck, I'm just speculating since I have no chance of reading the novel right now. Maybe SnS will be the push I wanted to finally get my ass off of this chair and go learn some Jap.

how did yuji become evil and how does he become god he has a wep and does he truly love shana?

I went through the novels once and probably missed something here and there but from what i understand:
Yuji's Reiji Maigo actually contains the soul or existence of several entities:

-one is john/johan who is the human lover of Pheles, a crimson lord. together they created the original Reiji Maigo so they could be with each other forever and Pheles would never have to take a human life ever again. Due to certain events johan was sealed into the Reiji maigo, and his personality once took over yuji's to speak to Pheles.

-Another entity is the silver flame knight who was responsible for taking away all which Margery Daw held dear.

-The last entity in the Reiji maigo is a lord of the crimson realm whose power is on the same scale as Alastor, Marchosias and Tiamat( We all know how powerful Alastor is from ep 24 don't we:D) who is know as the Sairei no Hebi. The Sairei no Hebi is somehow connected to the silver knight or they might even be the same person. he was sealed away a long time ago by the combined effort of many Flame Haze, banished and never to be reborn. however due to yuji and the Reiji Maigo he was reborn and inhabits yuji's body. In battle he/yuji wields the black/silver flame/shadow that combined with the anti-flame ring Azure, the sword Blutsauger and the Reiji maigo makes him darn close to be a invincible being. Currently he is the leader of the antagonist organization "The Bal Masqué". from the conversations he had with yuji i don't believe him to be a stereotypical evil boss like character, he seems to have a goal in which he honestly believes to be for the greater good. plus that unlike most other crimson world beings who view humans as nothing more than pawns or food source Sairei no Hebi actually has high respects of humans in general. He especially has a high degree of respect for Yuji, stating that yuji is someone who is worthy of sitting with him and embarking together to face the long road ahead. He even command his subordinates to call him "Lord of the crimson realm: Sairei no Hebi- Sakai Yuji". where other Crimson lords take their name from powerful mythological beings like angels, gods or demons. Sairei no Hebi chose to take the name of a human whose body he is inhabiting.

I don't see myself ever getting the novels, so I might as well ask--is there still no resolution to the Yuiji/Shana/Kazumi triangle--that was the impression I got from that other spoilers. If so, is this dealt with in a fashion that doesn't make Yuiji look horribly indecisive, or just a plain jackass stringing them both along? I.e. does it seem plausible and reasonable that he hasn't made a choice yet--the character, at least in the anime, always struck me as too considerate and sensible to be someone who callously punted on decisions like that.

Sadly there is still no resolution to the Yuiji/Shana/Kazumi triangle. Yuji went to the dark side just before he was about to make the decision. He left the two girls waiting for a answer that will probably never come.
Personally i think its plausible for someone like yuji to have a hard time making a decision between the two, besides for most of the time he is either too busy training or have to deal with life threatening situations all the time. there is actually more i wanted to say regarding this matter. but i m not sure if i can describe what i want to say clearly with my level of English. Sorry not a native speaker, and i have a problem with putting my words in my head on paper.:D

Thanks! From the anime at least, the series had a reasonably upbeat tone, so I would hope that there will be a satisfactory resolution of some sort at the end. After Yoshida getting a spine, she became a much more sympathetic character. I finally "got" what she said to Shana in ep 24 when she's trying to persuade her to go rescure Yuiji, because I just bought the licensed DVD (the fansub is a bit cryptic). That makes the triangle more interesting, but I still want to see Shana and Yuiji ending up together.

I actually can see Yuiji going all badass.

Anyhow, if Yuiji's gone bad, I assume that indicates the light novels are nearing the climactic end. Poor Shana--that'll be a headache for her, that's for sure. I assume in the end she'll have to somehow bring him back from the dark side.

I am maybe wrong, but I don't think the light novel is going to end soon. Refer to here (http://forums.animesuki.com/showpost.php?p=1088106&postcount=149).

About Yuji going to dark side, it is due to entity inside Reiji Maigo. Because of this hougu, he can live on. But then, the entity trapped in this hougu will cause him to turn evil. What a irony.

I wonder how he looks in that form and does the spirit take entire control of his body or they both share it?

He should still look like yuji with a different eye or expression. he is surrounded by black fire and casting a stunning silver shadow whenever he moves(he emits silver white light while surrounded by a aura of black flame, like some kind of half divine angel from heaven and half thrice damned demon from hell; a powerful and fitting yet sharp contrast he creates in the minds of reader) . it is fairly fitting that in one of his first appearances he descended from above floating down to greet his followers while being encased by a divine silver light and surrounded by a torrent of sinister black flame as he slowly descended to the ground like some god , while the members of Bal Masqué kneeled before their lord who has finally returned. It is also mentioned that many members of Bal Masque like Hecate for example, actually see the Sairei no Hebi the being that inhabits yuji (or "The Snake of the Festival" in English) as a god rather than a mere leader that leads them. Basically that whole scene in the novel was to show you that the new yuji is the bad-ass God of the Bal masques and to show-off his powers.

I believe that The Snake of the Festival is in control of yuji 's body, since it shows that the mind of the real yuji is unconscious or asleep but may still influence the decision made by the spirit. Besides The Snake of the Festival has a high respect for yuji and would perhaps honor his wishes. Bottom line is that right now The Snake of the Festival doesn't seem to be a really bad person but he is about to do things which will cause great conflict/turmoil in the world for his own ends. In the end only time will tell whether he is really evil or not, because right now we don't know enough about him to make a solid judgment.

If this magazine that the new manga will be serialized in (Dengeki Kuro Maoh) stays a quarterly magazine, it could take up to two years for one volume to get released (thats if we are considering about 9 chapters a volume, and about 20 pages a chapter).

We just have to wait and see. this magazine might turn out successful and the publisher might make it a bi-monthly magazine or even better, a monthly magazine :) publishers do this stuff all the time :)

So, basically, what's the difference between this new manga version? A more mature faithful adaptation of Takahashi's novels?

So far I've read up to vol 9 (+ vol 0) of the Taiwanese Chinese versions, and a lot more interesting stuff seems to be added.

I'm particularly intrigued by the fact in Vol 0's Q&A session (between Friagne and Marianne, lol) explaining how Flame Hazes used to be influential people when they were still mortal humans.

As we all know, Crimson Denizens steal people's "existence" in order to physically manifest themselves. There are also other Denizens (usually the more powerful Crimson Lords) who want to stop them from upsetting the balance between our world and the Crimson World.

Taking humans' existence in order to physically manifest themselves to stop other Denizens would totally defeat the purpose of stopping them upsetting the balance. It's like killing someone before a serial killer does in order to catch him. So in order to allow their power to manifest properly in this world without stealing anyone's existence, they needed humans whose "existence container" was large enough to hold them.

People with a "huge existence" are those who have a lot of social connection and influence, hence most peoples who were chosen as Flame Hazes tend to be royals or nobles in the past. Khamsin was a prince from some long-forgotten desert empire, while Wilhelmina was once referred to as "Princess" by Tiamat. I won't be surprised if Margery turns out to be some Scottish Highland noble.

That leaves just Shana. Alastor says she's a huge enough container for him, one of the most powerful Crimson Lords. Wonder if Shana hails from a family with a long heritage?

I've some question for some of you guys concerning vol 9, but please don't spoil beyond that. (I'm aware of a major event in vol 14, but I don't wanna know, yet. )

I'm still kind of confused by what Wilhelmina means by the enigmatic Johann being stuffed by his Denizen girlfriend into the Reiji Maigo inside of him just before he got destroyed. And now that Reiji Maigo has been transferred into Yuji. Does it mean Yuji's basically a ticking time bomb for this Johann to get resurrected at Yuji's expense?

It's a pity there's no still independent section for Shana here, as I do have a bunch of interesting philosophical stuff to discuss about, concerning existence and the metaphysics of how these powers work in the "Shana-verse". And these deserve its own thread.

Here's hoping we'll get something like that when the second series begins.

She is Pheles (wiki translation). she is the crimson lord who made the reiji maigo many centuries so her human lover can stay alive forever also so she never have to take another human life again to survive, she can live off the reiji maigo. her human lover is Johan who because of a certain chain of event became sealed into the reiji maigo. she spend her life trying to to find the reiji maigo so she can be reunited with her love. I re-read that explanation by Wilhelmina in vol 9.

While hunting for a certain Crimson Lord, Wilhelmina stumbled upon the legendary "Appointed Couple" Pheles and Johann somewhere in Central Asia, who happen to be on the run from that Crimson Lord (nicknamed "Broken Blade" or something, but I'll call him "Broken Blade" for convenience's sake here).

According to Wilhelmina, "Broken Blade" was well-known amongst the Crimson World circles as a hit-man, and his target this time happens to be Johann and Pheles.

Wihelmina took it upon herself to protect them both, as she realized Broken Blade's clients was aiming for the Reiji Maigo. But in the end, Johann was "critically wounded" after an ambush by Broken Blade.

Just before Johann's body disintegrates, Pheles quickly used some method to stuff Johann into the Mistes Torch inside of him, thus forcefully transferring the Reiji Maigo to a random location (Yuji) away from Broken Blade's grasp.

This is done in order to prevent the Reiji Maigo from falling into Broken Blade's hands once Johann's body disintegrates, as well as prolonging Johann's existence.

To this day, Pheles is still searching for the Reiji Maigo so that she could resurrect her lover.

Normally, Wilhelmina should be assisting Pheles, whom she has befriended, in her quest. However, here comes the twist. Just before the Reiji Maigo got randomly teleported, Broken Blade managed to stuff some sort of mysterious spell inside the Reiji Maigo.

Only Wilhelmina witnessed this (maybe Pheles went unconscious while Broken Blade did that). Wilhelmina must be guessing that this spell was most likely malicious (something like a Trojan horse virus), and if Johann was resurrected, that spell would be triggered, causing widespread havoc to the balance of the two worlds.

Wilhelmina knows Pheles is intent on resurrecting her lover, so persuading her not to is useless. The only choice Wilhelmina has is to get to the Reiji Maigo before Pheles and destroy its host (Yuji) again and again, preventing Pheles from ever reaching the Reiji Maigo, i.e. a perpetual race against time.

Thanks to Shana interfering, Wilhelmina now has to contemplate fighting her friend Pheles.

I get the impression that this would mean taking Reiji Maigo out of Yuji the Torch and using it to revive Johann. I believe it would be done at the expense of Yuji, perhaps, or possibly a spell to revive the memories within the hougu itself.

Yes, you are right, to revive Johan. Pheles would have to do it at Yuji's expense. Originally Pheles planned to sacrifice Yuji to bring back Johan. However.....

Her plans were surprisingly stopped by non-other than Johan himself, also if my memories serves me. another entity in the reiji maigo used the silver flame to play a part in it as well.

Kinny Riddle, what could be the trojan virus? Could it be The Snake of the Festival (Sairei no Hebi), main leader of the Balle Masque?

A very good guess, and one that is quite close to the mark :heh:.

The spell that was inputed to Yuuji "大命詩篇" Poem of ? Life(?) which result in a change of substance of Yuuji's flame to sliver. A corruption is a good way to look at this.

With the event at end of Vol. 14. Where Yuuji have either merged or has his will taken by Ceremonial Snake.

What it is interesting what Ceremonial Snake have said before this have happened to Yuuji, "To embark together with me on the journey.... the only.....Human.", and also what Bel Peol announced their leader's new name as at the end of Vol. 14 - "I understand. Ceremonial Snake Sakai Yuuji".

Which leads me favor the possibility of merging.

Grrr... at Vol. 15 been yet another flashback/side arc. Maybe its to set the stage for the 2 new Flame Haze to be introduced, I don't object one more loli Flame Haze :heh:.

Maybe for the final stage they will have all the flame hazes fight Yuji. I mean thats how the Ceremonial Snake was taken down before( being surprise butt-se*ked by all the flame hazes at once).

Event such as another great war does seems to be one approach to this if the story is going to head towards a bitter-sweat ending. But things really looks bad for the Flame Hazes given how much stronger the enemy is.

However it really depends on how serious Yuuji/Ceremonial Snake is going to fight with Shana. But given the last power level measurement of Yuuji, he stands at least equal in terms of raw power with a Guze no Oh, and thats before we add Ceremonial Snake in to the equation. Given the insane amount of power existence that Ceremonial Snake have, even if Yuuji's body can only draw on part of it, in theory Yuuji should once again receive an major power boost. And when you add the eternal mechanism Reiji into the mix as well current Yuuji may well be unkillable.

What is it suppose to be?
It's the new manga that's based on the events of the tenth light novel.
Is this manga licensed? If yes, then it will not be translated into English. And, those who don't know Japanese like me will not understand what it is all about.
I don't think it's been licensed yet, I could be wrong though.

I translated it to the best of my ability. It's not perfect so don't complain to much.

Christmas. One boy faded away.

Losing origin 'the power of existence' it assumed that it was not. The absence was completely forgotten, without being noticed to who, to obtain power. The mono who has disappeared has not returned once again. With so knowing, furthermore シャナ and Yoshida Kazumi continue to believe his existence. Thanks for the translation, UPR. Let me get this straight, the main gist is that after taking over Yuji's body, snake of the festival arrives at Misaki city. Judging by the way it is, the novel series should not end in novel no. 17.

First post YAY! =P

Don't you mean volume 16?

I noticed something if the series ended with volume 16 it would end on the 5th anniversery of when volume 1 was released cause it was released on November 10, 2002, and volume 16 will be released on November 10, 2007.

Here is what I think. Novel 16: Snake of the festival arrives at Misaki city.
Novel 17: Maybe it will tell about Shana and other Flame Hazes try to defeat Snake of the festival.
Since Snake of the festival is the main boss of tomogara, I don't suppose within one volume, Snake of the festival can be defeated. So at least, the story should be at least extended to 18th novel.

Well, I could be wrong.

That makes sense, but the fighting could start during the second half of volume 16, and it could end at volume 17... though it depends on whether they actually fight or not, I mean we don't really know the snake of the festivals intentions (though i haven't read volume 15 yet so his intentions could have been revealed in the flashback) to anyone who's read volume 15 what is the relevance between the flashback in that volume, and the current events?

I'd also like to ask the events of volume 15. I see all kinds of characters.

Is the whole volume flashback or does it focus away from Shana and co.

The whole volume is flashbacks of various characters, I have not done reading it yet, but from what i can see only the epilogue near the end covers the thoughts of Current Shana and Yoshida as they wait for Yuji-who will never come. and how they both received the letters they send to Yuji , opened and untouched otherwise and nothing else.

Basically vol 15 was all flashback except the epilogue.

Question for me.

How did the Snake of the Festival's presence activate in Yuuji? Thus far, there are at least three entities that make up the "Mystes" known as Sakai Yuuji - Johann, the Snake, and the Torch of the dead human Sakai Yuuji. Someone mentioned the "silver knight" could also be there.

What I want to know is, what is the significance of the silver fire, why is there black fire, and did Johann + the Snake + Yuuji merge into a single being, or are they three minds in a single person?

Additionally, what Hougu does Yuuji have and where did he get them from? He has the "Azure Ring" from Firagne and the Blutsaugre from the incest twins, but how does that make him powerful enough to battle Tomogara? In the anime he's still useless up through the Ball Masque situation, his only defining moment was simply picking up Blutsaugre.

Finally, why did "Sakai Yuuji" kill Wilhelmina?

far as I can tell from reading a few articles, the whole thing with putting a trap inside the Reiji Maigo to kill Pheles if she ever tried to get Johann out was just a ploy. it was always meant to allow the snake to escape from eternal imprisonment. think it simply reached it's gestation period and was at last able to take control of the torch that held the reiji maigo. don't know if that's because the allotted time has passed since the reiji maigo was infected or if it's simply because Yuji lived longer than all the other mystes (what with wilhelmina killing them and all)

Johann doesn't seem to be part of the unification, just Sakai and the snake, and the snake obviously has control of the body. don't know if Sakai is still a separate personality in there somewhere or not though.

so far Sakai still just has 3 hougu, that might have changed by volume 16 now that he's leader of Bal Masque and all, but right now he just has those 3. and those 3 are actually pretty powerful ones. tomogara can't touch him with flame techniques, anything he hits bleeds (especially useful since he can only be touched by physical attacks), and he's got psuedo-infinite existence.

and huh? Sakai didn't kill Wilhelmina. (least not yet) all he's done so far is gone to Seireiden.

but I haven't read the novels nor researched any of this that deeply, so anyone who knows better feel free to correct anything and everything I said.

Just to add a bit more to what ashlay said
Well, the silver fire is from the silver knight, he appears to have merged with Yuji and the black fire is from the snake.
yes those three hougu possessed by Yuji are powerful ones but it would also appear that Yuji's training from the flame hazes are paying off as he literally was getting stronger everyday although this may be in fact due to the reji maigo as it slowly gives yuji more existence everyday in addition to recharging him. This is just one possible way to explain how Yuji became so strong in such a short period of time.

Just checking, but the 3 are the Azure from Friagne, Balsauger/Blood Sucker (whatever) from the male twin, and Reiji Maigo/Midnight Lost Child, right?

Thank you for your prompt responses, I am most thankful. :D

A few more points of clarification -

When exactly did Yuuji turn "dark", that is, the Snake gained control of his abilities? Additionally, how were the Snake and Silver Knight imprisoned in the Reiji Maigo? Is Yuuji basically the Silver Knight right now and is merging with the Snake? Lastly, was the Reiji Maigo ending up in Yuuji just coincidence, or was there a reason for it appering in him?

I'll leave things at that, likely most of the questions will be answered in season II of the show, hopefully.

-near the end of volume 14. (which is far as the novels are at this point into the shana story, till volume 16 is out that is) Shana and Yoshida both send him cards that they want to spend Christmas with him, so he goes to choose one of them. and apparently on his way to where they're waiting there's a voice in his head? at which point the snake completely takes over and heads for Seireiden, and Shana and Yoshida are left there waiting for Yuji, who isn't coming now.

-The snake isn't imprisoned inside the Reiji Maigo, the snake was/possibly still is imprisoned in some sort of area outside of reality, sealed there by various crimson lords. the Reiji Maigo is a way for the snake to escape from there (the explanation isn't quite like this, but a simple way to think of it is that the Reiji Maigo breaks certain basic laws of the Shana universe, making it a good method to break other 'absolutes' like eternal imprisonment.

-I'm also a little confused about this whole silver thing, since from what I read it sounded like the Snake/Yuji having a silver shadow was more a byproduct of the black flame, and that Silver might just have had that color flame because he had been in possession of that Bal Masque Hougu (tyrant was it?). well anyway, parts of silver were apparently inside the Reiji Maigo, I suppose as a byproduct of using the unrestricted method needed for the eventual revival of the snake.

-didn't seem to be any particular reason why Yuji ended up with the Reiji Maigo, nor was he the first after Johann's "death"

same caveat as last time, please correct my possible errors more knowledgeable people.

well, it happens in 1901, and in Hawaii if I'm not mistaken. protagonists and main antagonist aren't involved in the current events...so nothing much really, least for now. but lets see....

-Pheles and Johann make an appearance.
-Dantalion (aka crazy professor) makes an appearance, and apparently had made a reference back to Sarre, a male protagonist in this one, in volume 7 (and might I add that Sarre is the spitting image of Vann from GxS)
-Epilogue of 15 has Shana and Yoshida still looking for Yuji.
-I seem to recall something along the lines of "a character introduced in 15 will be important later." Maybe Sarre, seeing as how he's apparently been planned for awhile (vol 7)

hmmm

I can imagine them doing the ending scene to season 2 of shana with Yuji standing up from the throne of bal masque with everyone else in bal masque kneeling towards him. This way they can milk more money from season 3

I sure hope not. If the novel's going to end anytime soon, I think they should wrap it up this season. I'm a big fan, but that doesn't meant that I want it to drag on needlessly.

FOR YOUR INFORMATION

Since Shakugan no Shana got its own subforum, it was really the case to separate manga discussion and novels discussion.

A Manga only (http://forums.animesuki.com/showthread.php?t=55963) discussion thread has been created, so from now please move there every ongoing discussion you had about the manga. Of course, you're free to copy your posts in the new place if you wish.

Please use this thread for novels only discussion from now on.

Does anyone have both the English and Japanese novels?

If so, how are the translations?

I really only bothered to wonder this after I realized that the English novels don't have I, II, III, etc...

i have a question here, what exactly Nietono no Shana 's power is ? in the anime it is just a sword and in the moive i saw a glass can cut a tomogara so why did shana use Nietono no Shana instead of bloodsuker ?

could anybody upload an imagie of yuji with bloodsucker thanh a lot ? (i like that sword a lot)

Ok, So I got the second volume translated by Viz two days ago. I haven't been able to read very much yet but one thing that kinda annoys me is that they chose to translated killing intent to kill. Shana said to Yuji while "training". "The important thing is. You need to feel the kill." Sounds very bad in my opinion and I think we have the right to complain since they take about half a year to translate. True I'm grateful that they even bother translating but couldn't they do a QC

*you should put this bit in spoiler tags*
Nietono no Shana ignores the effects of all unrestricted methods.

Blutsauger makes people touching the blade (either directly or through a proxy) bleed when the owner places power of existance into it. the more existance, the greater the effect.

besides the fact it's first and foremost a design choice, I think it's fairly obvious why a flame haze would prefer Shana over Blutsauger.
