A cruiser as originally defined was a ship that functioned alone away from the fleet, often hunting merchants or pirates, or generally showing the flag. Larger warships where kept closer to home or ported ready to sortie for a real war, but not acutally going far out to see much. Power projection was thus the domain of these “cruisers” which was the largest ship one would normally see in the far flung reaches of an empire. In reality it wasn’t eve a class of ships per say, but rather a fleet role as such a “cruiser” could be a frigate, man O’ war, or even larger sloops.

As you got into the 1800s the definition began to evolve and the moniker was applied to ships built specifically for this role. These ships tended to be of medium sizes five to ten thousands tons was common with good endurance at sea and a medium caliber battery of weapons with the main weapons being of six to eight inches. They were still intended for tasks like recon and screening as well as raiding though so speed was still important and most were expected to be able to out run the battleships of their era. These ships evolved around two tracks in the late 1800s the protected cruiser had some limited armoring over vital areas (namely coal and ammo bunkers) and her deck, the armored cruiser had this as well as a true armor belt along her flanks.

One might expect these ships evolved into “light” and “heavy” cruisers respectively, but that’s not acutally the case armored cruisers eventually swelled into “battlecruisers” (battleship caliber weapons, cruiser class armor), while protected cruisers morphed into the light cruiser. So what’s a heavy cruiser then? Frankly it’s a largely artificial and political moniker brought on by naval treaties in the 1930s, a heavy cruiser was defined as a ship with guns larger then 6.1 inches. In practice many navies acutally disfavored heavy cruisers the higher rate of fire from lighter six inch guns was considered of greater value then the slightly higher range and striking power of the other common caliber of eight inches (it didn’t help that armor that resisted six inch shells also tended to fare well against eight inch rounds). Most light cruisers built during this era sported huge batteries of up to fifteen six inch guns, the other common load out for “heavy” cruiser being nine eight inch guns, both where treaty limited to 10,000 tons though.

During the 30s with the heavy restrictions placed on battleship fleet sizes cruisers took over from them as fleet workhorses getting bigger, better armed, and more capable. In fact this cruiser arms race largely defeated half the point of the various naval treaties instead of building huge fleets of battleships to compete with each other nations built huge fleets of cruisers instead.

Just as carriers evolved into the “big sticks” of fleet combat during leading up to the second world cruisers evolved into the main wing of the various navies surface action forces. Treaties meant that no nation could field enough battleships to cover their various needs so cruisers took over most of their roles, even when the treaties lapsed just before WW2 no one really ramped up and produced large fleets of BBs again as the carrier was clearly the new dominate weapon system. As such all through the war cruisers carried the bulk of surface actions throughout the war. Battleship vs battleship combat pretty much didn’t happen on a large scale, but large scale engagements between cruisers squadrons and supporting DDs where common as dirt.

Cruisers evolved into the fleet work horses doing nearly every job and when armed with torpedoes could even pose a threat to heavy battleships. The end of WW2 and the emergence of the guided missiles rendered most armor fairly useless and reduced big guns to total obsolescence. Those two things are the only reason to build something the size of a battleship to begin with and so the cruiser by default became the biggest class of commonly used surface ship.

They continued to evolve though there gun batteries shrank and then vanished replaced by missiles, they’re sensor systems where beefed up, many of them gained limited aviation facilities (helicopters), and a secondary anti-submarine mission. Cruisers became “specialized multi-taskers” fulfilling most missions you might need of a surface ship. The next generation of cruisers will take this further as it will reintroduce heavy guns and perhaps eventually even mount rail weapons, various sorts of UVs both air and water based are also being integrated as well. A modern cruiser is much more then a floating SAM site it’s a multi-mission general purposes warship fit to undertake almost any task to some degree and able to deploy alone for extend periods if needed as well.

Destroyers also have a long interesting history, but in modern times the line between them and cruisers has blurred to near non-existence note for instance that the modern Arleigh Burke class "destroyer" weighs 10,000 tons... the weight of a WW2 heavy cruiser.

Armor normally either IS the hull or it's underneath it, by this twisted logic I could look at a Iowa class and say "armor... where?"

They’re sci-fi battle ships with all the trimmings artificial gravity, inertial dampening, repulsor lifts (and if you’ve got all that mass lightening is hardly impossible), ludicrously efficient engines, AND they’re probably built in zero-G. Frankly they’ve got no reason NOT to be covered in heavy armor plating. Plus just look at the things they’re seethed end to end in shiny metal plating of some kind, unless you want to argue this is a sheet metal façade I’m saying its armor plate.

The kiss disengaged. Shocked, Fate could only stare at Halcyon who then giggled and pressed a finger on her swollen lips. “Taste like peach.”

The Belkan system once rivaled the Midchildan system, but is now in decline, though powerful practitioners still exists. In StrikerS, we only have Ancient and Neo Belkan IIRC. Ancient Belka is the real thing, while Neo Belka is actually a Midchildan emulation, perhaps to supplement their own system.

Why they don't try and learn the real thing instead of engaging in magic piracy is beyond me, but I believe it could be either due to

a) the Belkans refused to divulge their secrets to their rivals, or
b) Ancient Belka was lost before the Midchildans could actually learn it, and they are forced to replicate it with whatever information they can get (which could be quite extensive, considering the fact that the Infinite Library is in Midchildan hands).

The Belkan System, on the whole, centres around the concept of reinforcing the physical aspects of its knights imho, be it weapons or the knights' bodies. Belka chose the path of close-ranged, 1-to-1 combat over ranged and 1-to-many combat (good duelists, but not-so-good when mobbed). In terms of emitting and controlling emitted magical energy, it is inferior to Midchilda, but it redeems itself in terms of power. Most of the ranged spells shown either require mana to be forged into a solid form (the Dagger spells), or requires a medium to channel mana out (Vita's Schwalbefliegen, Signum's ranged spells).

Belkan knights generally use armed devices, which are weapon-type devices equipped with the Cartridge system not found amongst Midchildan staves (with the exception of Nanoha, Fate and Tiana. But then again, Cross Mirage isn't a staff, but rather a one-of-a-kind device). Despite the benefits of the Cartridge system, the difficulty in its use is actually one of the reasons for the decline of the Belkan style.

Besides the Cartridge system, Belka also boast of the ultimate stage in Intelligent Device development: the Unison Device.

(If you ask me, it seems that Belkan researchers tend to come up with the craziest stuff that, while wildly powerful, are also terribly hard to master.)

Regarding the claim that Ancient Belka is also proficient in beam-spamming like Midchilda, honestly I'm not so sure about this. The only Ancient Belkan user shown capable of this is Hayate, but we must remember that Hayate's spells come from the Tome of the Night Sky, which doesn't just contain Ancient Belkan spells. There is also a possibility that Hayate or Reinforce might have used or modified spells from other systems.

The above is whatever I could gather from Nanohawiki's entry on the Belkan Style as well as this page containing a Chinese translation of the magic used in series 1 and A's.

Born into a noble family, Katrina was orphaned shortly after birth when her parents were caught up in the vicious fighting common back in that period. She succeeded her parents as an only child and was brought up by the family advisors.

Katrina was often uncomfortable around people and frequently turned away visitors when she was feeling unwell and spent much of her childhood in solitude, resulting in her being a quiet and reclusive child. Her sole joy was in studies of the magical arts, showing great aptitude for it as well. The young child, in rare displays of mischief, would trip or alter the appearance of her many tutors, often to their bemused misfortune. She would go on to find her interests struck by song and music in time.

Even at a tender age, Katrina had her exposure of affairs beyond her. Between her many studies and the history of the world, Katrina could not fully comprehend the workings of why people sought the political and warfare of their time, which only brought ceaseless conflict and turmoil, though evident the outcomes would be. Her own answers, though inadequate for now, would have a deeper effect on her mindset in the future.

Katrina completed her primary magical education by age 12, even being able to manage a degree of flight, though still far from the level of control shown by veterans on the battlefield. Among her many achievements and gifts, she was also born with a voice that was described by all as the very ‘voice of the heavens’. Her fame as a songstress spread until she was called upon to act as one in the most unlikely and undesirable of places possible, out on the battlefields.

Katrina performed her duty splendidly though her performance was only a prelude to the beginning, marked by her collapse soon after. When inquired about the incident, she could only explain in bits and pieces what she experienced before her collapse. The surroundings had felt ‘heavy’ and she glimpsed flashes of memories. Memories of other people and all terrible in depiction. The next few years would be marked with frequent occurrences of such, weighing down heavily onto the young girl’s mind, each black-out with increasing clarity and defilement in her mind.

The next few years saw Katrina among the places of other nobles, though none as young as her and already participating in political affairs. Those in doubts and underestimation of the young lady were quickly surprised by her sharp mind and sharper words, honed by tutors and advisors to prepare her for the treacherous realm she was stepping into. Swayed over by her charismatic charm and words, the support of the nobles cemented her previously dubious position of being the youngest noble ever in control of one of the Five Great Houses into one of great power and position.

Being in the place of such people did not sit well with her though, for she had heard and in some cases, saw the deeds they had done, which brought disgust and repulsion of no end to her. Considering it a necessary evil, she partook in working with them in the name of the empire to her fullest extent while in reality she had no wish of any of this other than to fulfill the duty she had to carry in her stead of her parents.

The maturing young girl’s joys remained in the practice of magic, and indulgence with song and music in her secluded mansion retreat deep within some of the most beautiful areas on the planet whenever the chance arose. Those were the few things that gave her much-needed moments of quiet tranquility among the ugliness of humans, the former becoming increasingly rare as she learned more of the latter.

Things were rapidly going out of control at the frontlines. Nations in conflict grew ever more impatient to either end the fighting or finish the conquest they sought. Desperate measures were implemented in the name of such immediate needs. Various kinds of experimentation on mages to enhance their powers, drugs and chemicals to boost the capabilities of soldiers, deployment of conventional, biological and magical weaponry that devastated everything on the battlefield, wasting both the land and the soldiers from both sides who died on it.

All took a sharp dive towards a downwards spiral when one side broke the sole and unwritten rule common in warfare: Lost Logias as weapons of war.

With that the gloves came off. Each and every battle that involved a Lost Logia brought a swift and overwhelming end and in turn added pressure to the escalating situation. Katrina was ordered to be part of a convoy to transport and guard the Eye of Fire, a highly dangerous and powerful artifact even among Lost Logia, to where a critical area was in danger of being overwhelmed by enemy forces.

The convoy was heavily guarded but enemy forces had gotten wind of the transport nonetheless and had moved to intercept the Lost Logia for themselves. The Eye of Fire was too considered too dangerous to be simply left alone, hence the desperate preemptive strike.

The assault proved to be a much bloodier affair than expected by both sides. Katrina, being the bearer of the Eye, was overwhelmed by the clash and in desperation, channeled all her strength into the Lost Logia in misplaced hopes to end the attack quickly.

The Logia proved too much for Katrina to control, as it soon went on to draw mana from her Linker Core even after being awakened. Going berserk soon after, all in the near vicinity was killed. The fires unleashed were of such strength that the very air on the battlefield turned to a raging inferno and both sides were decimated within minutes. The flames went unquenched, going on to consume the nearby regions as well, sparing nothing within its reach.

The horrific aftermath was explained as the Logia going berserk and destroying itself in the process, consuming regions on both sides of the border. The incident that gave both sides pause about the consequences of dabbling with ancient artifacts recklessly as weapons and even ceased combat for awhile came to be known as the Day of the Tears of Fire.

Amazingly and unknown to others, Katrina was the sole survivor in the incident. Albeit badly burned, Linker Core severely exhausted and near the verge of death. Her subsequent survival later could only be credited to one explanation: The Eye was not destroyed but had somehow fused with her body, enabling her to survive the cataclysmic turn of events.

Still, the after effects were yet to come. Barely alive, Katrina could not exert control over the Eye that was now within her, every so often setting something ablaze or even her body sometimes. Enduring excruciating pain at the torture of her body, it took days for her complete recovery and several weeks of intensive meditation to develop the necessary restrain to safeguard herself.

Katrina knew that it would be better for her to remain dead and missing otherwise to face some very tough questions she would have to answer. Her status of a Lost Logia-infused mage would also be subjected to close scrutiny if she ever returned to her country, which certainly would include the scientists eager to study her as a freak experiment. Without much of a choice left, she hid herself at the edge of the empire, living in isolation.

One thing became increasingly apparent to Katrina as the days went by. The young woman had effectively stopped aging since the fateful day, another attribute that could only be explained by the fusion of the Lost Logia into her body. For good or for worse, Katrina was now free to explore and learn more magic skills than any other mage could in their lifetimes now that time was no longer a concern to her frame.

The fighting and unrest continued meanwhile. The use of Lost Logia as weapons reached its climax several decades after with the deployment of the Cradle of the Saint King by the Belkan Empire. The Cradle returned so badly damaged that it crashed shortly there after. With planetary wide fighting going on, few knew of the Cradle’s return save for the mages that happened to be fighting near its crash site. Katrina was in the nearby region making short work of deserter mages from the Empire when the Cradle fell in the distance.

The next century and a half bore witness to the darker histories of Mid-Childa as the entire planet subsequently descended into anarchy with the collapse of the Belkan Empire. Taking it as a great opportunity to test her limits, Katrina was involved in a fair amount of fighting and burned many fortresses to the ground, ironically many which were defended by her fellow Belkans. The fighting ravaged on until the founding of the TSAB some seventy five years later. Serving the need to stop the decades old fighting and bring the warring factions under a single authority, the period was marked as the Reunification Wars, during which Katrina partook in some of the most intense battles to have ever been fought on Mid-Childan soil. Eventually the fighting died down and the period of rebuilding the devastated planet begun as well as ushering in the establishment of the TSAB control over Mid-Childa.

With the end of the fighting, Mid-Childa no longer held interest for Katrina and she left the planet, though she came back and left several times after her first departure, for reasons unknown.
Returning from her latest trip, a certain discovery came to her attention. A recent archeological dig yielded some pretty interesting artifacts, of which among the Jewel Seeds initially unearthed by the Scrya clan, an old magical tome was also discovered on the same excavation site, with the ancient text on the book claiming it to be the Grimoire of Fire.

Personality/Behavior
Katrina before the fateful incident was a simple girl troubled by her circumstances. A young noble who had to handle the difficulties of her position as well as being tormented by unknown visions from time to time. Though she held much respect and authority, Katrina in reality had no wish to even bother over such matters, let alone be in charge of it all. A simple girl who was just curious and eager to delve into the magical arts as much as possible, as well as enjoy the pleasures life could offer in its limits. Or so she thought.

The Day of Tears of Fire changed all that, and affected in many ways simply than at the surface level and would continue to do so long after it ended. Ironically, her former wish was granted in a twisted way though clearly at the cost of changing her very existence as well as being subjected to a unknown frustration born from that day and the hazards of a enormous power she barely had any knowledge of, let alone controlling it.

Before the incident, her visions was hazy and wild at best though long after she found the visions to be as vivid as recalling her own memories. Acceptance slowly set in until she was no longer afraid of the visions, partially because of the degree of control she had now.

Over the long decades, Katrina changed, as decreed by change itself, by the events set forth around her. Being involved and seeing the repetition of mistakes by those around her confused her. Confusion changed into frustration and later, again into acceptance. Such an impact was clearly reflected in her slowly cynical and aggressive manner over time.

As of now, Katrina has grown into a person of many faces but it’s clear at least that she is very much a being of desire and impulses with a unique perception of the world in general. Supremely confident in manner, Katrina has no doubt of her self. Ruthless and focused, Katrina often seeks to obtain what she wants through a number of possible methods rather than the most obvious solution, as she is fond of the planning and manipulation involved. Though she will try things in a roundabout manner, her straightforward manner shows up in demanding what she wants, case in point wrangling information from a certain scientist harboring the greatest of ambitions.

Katrina can switch her demeanor between aggressive and excited to one of complete genteel and calm and back in the next second so reading her is harder than anything else. Her behavior is certainly schizophrenic at times but a sharp and analytical mind is always in control behind whatever façade she may be putting on. Likewise it’s hard to guess when she truly means what she says or when she is simply playing, exploiting the use of words and gestures to their fullest extend, as part of her mind games.

Her manners in disguise often portray her as a polite person, though not always to the point and slightly ditzy as well. Her impulsive side surfaces frequently here with boredom though she has never given the game away. Katrina can blend in so well with her conduct that her vicious and malicious side is something most would never even imagine of her.

On the other hand, Katrina’s dark personality shows through even more brilliantly. A bona fide sadist developed from her long periods of solitude and even longer periods spent on the bloody battlefields of her time. Be it in questioning or fighting, she prefers to give the worst option to her opponents, leaving them with hell or a worst kind of hell one way or another. Ironically, she has the best control of her impulses in this form and her actions are as daring and bold as she is confident. Tempered by her mentality, the slightest hints of impatience only show from time to time though she is never one to worry or be upset even if the situation is unfavorable.

Unpredictable and a wild card in any situation, Katrina remains a formidable force in any encounter. Her most recent and prominent partner is none other than the Orphan of Al Hazard, Jail Scaglietti.

I considered the theory you mentioned, but it fails to explain why Jail didn't use the "Get Objective Done Now" speed from the start. He is not Palpy - he does not have to slowly kill off the heroine's friends one by one to get her to fall to the "Dark Side". Surely, he'd be in the best negotiating position when his Cradle is in its firing position, hours before the fleet can arrive and way above the engagement altitude of ground mages.

I think part of it has to do with the scorned scientist aspect of Jail's charecter. In his own words, the attack on Ground Forces HQ was essentially a hugeass tech demonstration. Jail strikes me as a guy who's sick and tired of the way everyone's been brushing him off and ignoring him and his abilities, and now that he finally has that power that'll make people sit up and notice him, he's going to savor it and ascend slowly, taunting the TSAB: "Your air mages can chase me but they can't do jack shit against the Cradle!"

Or as TK mentioned, the engines needed time to spool up. *shrug*

With that the gloves came off. Each and every battle that involved a Lost Logia brought a swift and overwhelming end and in turn added pressure to the escalating situation. Katrina was ordered to be part of a convoy to transport and guard the Eye of Fire, a highly dangerous and powerful artifact even among Lost Logia, to where a critical area was in danger of being overwhelmed by enemy forces.

The convoy was heavily guarded but enemy forces had gotten wind of the transport nonetheless and had moved to intercept the Lost Logia for themselves. The Eye of Fire was too considered too dangerous to be simply left alone, hence the desperate preemptive strike.

The assault proved to be a much bloodier affair than expected by both sides. Katrina, being the bearer of the Eye, was overwhelmed by the clash and in desperation, channeled all her strength into the Lost Logia in misplaced hopes to end the attack quickly.

The Logia proved too much for Katrina to control, as it soon went on to draw mana from her Linker Core even after being awakened. Going berserk soon after, all in the near vicinity was killed. The fires unleashed were of such strength that the very air on the battlefield turned to a raging inferno and both sides were decimated within minutes. The flames went unquenched, going on to consume the nearby regions as well, sparing nothing within its reach.

The horrific aftermath was explained as the Logia going berserk and destroying itself in the process, consuming regions on both sides of the border. The incident that gave both sides pause about the consequences of dabbling with ancient artifacts recklessly as weapons and even ceased combat for awhile came to be known as the Day of the Tears of Fire.

Amazingly and unknown to others, Katrina was the sole survivor in the incident. Albeit badly burned, Linker Core severely exhausted and near the verge of death. Her subsequent survival later could only be credited to one explanation: The Eye was not destroyed but had somehow fused with her body, enabling her to survive the cataclysmic turn of events.

Still, the after effects were yet to come. Barely alive, Katrina could not exert control over the Eye that was now within her, every so often setting something ablaze or even her body sometimes. Enduring excruciating pain at the torture of her body, it took days for her complete recovery and several weeks of intensive meditation to develop the necessary restrain to safeguard herself.

Katrina knew that it would be better for her to remain dead and missing otherwise to face some very tough questions she would have to answer. Her status of a Lost Logia-infused mage would also be subjected to close scrutiny if she ever returned to her country, which certainly would include the scientists eager to study her as a freak experiment. Without much of a choice left, she hid herself at the edge of the empire, living in isolation.

One thing became increasingly apparent to Katrina as the days went by. The young woman had effectively stopped aging since the fateful day, another attribute that could only be explained by the fusion of the Lost Logia into her body. For good or for worse, Katrina was now free to explore and learn more magic skills than any other mage could in their lifetimes now that time was no longer a concern to her frame.

The fighting and unrest continued meanwhile. The use of Lost Logia as weapons reached its climax several decades after with the deployment of the Cradle of the Saint King by the Belkan Empire. The Cradle returned so badly damaged that it crashed shortly there after. With planetary wide fighting going on, few knew of the Cradle’s return save for the mages that happened to be fighting near its crash site. Katrina was in the nearby region making short work of deserter mages from the Empire when the Cradle fell in the distance.

The next century and a half bore witness to the darker histories of Mid-Childa as the entire planet subsequently descended into anarchy with the collapse of the Belkan Empire. Taking it as a great opportunity to test her limits, Katrina was involved in a fair amount of fighting and burned many fortresses to the ground, ironically many which were defended by her fellow Belkans. The fighting ravaged on until the founding of the TSAB some seventy five years later. Serving the need to stop the decades old fighting and bring the warring factions under a single authority, the period was marked as the Reunification Wars, during which Katrina partook in some of the most intense battles to have ever been fought on Mid-Childan soil. Eventually the fighting died down and the period of rebuilding the devastated planet begun as well as ushering in the establishment of the TSAB control over Mid-Childa.

With the end of the fighting, Mid-Childa no longer held interest for Katrina and she left the planet, though she came back and left several times after her first departure, for reasons unknown.
Returning from her latest trip, a certain discovery came to her attention. A recent archeological dig yielded some pretty interesting artifacts, of which among the Jewel Seeds initially unearthed by the Scrya clan, an old magical tome was also discovered on the same excavation site, with the ancient text on the book claiming it to be the Grimoire of Fire.

Personality/Behavior
Katrina before the fateful incident was a simple girl troubled by her circumstances. A young noble who had to handle the difficulties of her position as well as being tormented by unknown visions from time to time. Though she held much respect and authority, Katrina in reality had no wish to even bother over such matters, let alone be in charge of it all. A simple girl who was just curious and eager to delve into the magical arts as much as possible, as well as enjoy the pleasures life could offer in its limits. Or so she thought.

The Day of Tears of Fire changed all that, and affected in many ways simply than at the surface level and would continue to do so long after it ended. Ironically, her former wish was granted in a twisted way though clearly at the cost of changing her very existence as well as being subjected to a unknown frustration born from that day and the hazards of a enormous power she barely had any knowledge of, let alone controlling it.

Before the incident, her visions was hazy and wild at best though long after she found the visions to be as vivid as recalling her own memories. Acceptance slowly set in until she was no longer afraid of the visions, partially because of the degree of control she had now.

Over the long decades, Katrina changed, as decreed by change itself, by the events set forth around her. Being involved and seeing the repetition of mistakes by those around her confused her. Confusion changed into frustration and later, again into acceptance. Such an impact was clearly reflected in her slowly cynical and aggressive manner over time.

As of now, Katrina has grown into a person of many faces but it’s clear at least that she is very much a being of desire and impulses with a unique perception of the world in general. Supremely confident in manner, Katrina has no doubt of her self. Ruthless and focused, Katrina often seeks to obtain what she wants through a number of possible methods rather than the most obvious solution, as she is fond of the planning and manipulation involved. Though she will try things in a roundabout manner, her straightforward manner shows up in demanding what she wants, case in point wrangling information from a certain scientist harboring the greatest of ambitions.

Katrina can switch her demeanor between aggressive and excited to one of complete genteel and calm and back in the next second so reading her is harder than anything else. Her behavior is certainly schizophrenic at times but a sharp and analytical mind is always in control behind whatever façade she may be putting on. Likewise it’s hard to guess when she truly means what she says or when she is simply playing, exploiting the use of words and gestures to their fullest extend, as part of her mind games.

Her manners in disguise often portray her as a polite person, though not always to the point and slightly ditzy as well. Her impulsive side surfaces frequently here with boredom though she has never given the game away. Katrina can blend in so well with her conduct that her vicious and malicious side is something most would never even imagine of her.

On the other hand, Katrina’s dark personality shows through even more brilliantly. A bona fide sadist developed from her long periods of solitude and even longer periods spent on the bloody battlefields of her time. Be it in questioning or fighting, she prefers to give the worst option to her opponents, leaving them with hell or a worst kind of hell one way or another. Ironically, she has the best control of her impulses in this form and her actions are as daring and bold as she is confident. Tempered by her mentality, the slightest hints of impatience only show from time to time though she is never one to worry or be upset even if the situation is unfavorable.

Unpredictable and a wild card in any situation, Katrina remains a formidable force in any encounter. Her most recent and prominent partner is none other than the Orphan of Al Hazard, Jail Scaglietti.

As for your question , Katrina's magic style is still predominatly AB though closer to a mix of Hayate and the Wolkies style. For the inclusion of Mid-magic, it's used to supplement her range abilities and is part of her casting style for her bigger spells, much like how Hayate uses both the triangle and circle in casting sometimes.

Serving the need to stop the decades old fighting and bring the warring factions under a single authority, the period was marked as the Reunification Wars, during which Katrina partook in some of the most intense battles to have ever been fought on Mid-Childan soil. Eventually the fighting died down and the period of rebuilding the devastated planet begun as well as ushering in the establishment of the TSAB control over Mid-Childa.

With the end of the fighting, Mid-Childa no longer held interest for Katrina and she left the planet, though she came back and left several times after her first departure, for reasons unknown.
Returning from her latest trip, a certain discovery came to her attention. A recent archeological dig yielded some pretty interesting artifacts, of which among the Jewel Seeds initially unearthed by the Scrya clan, an old magical tome was also discovered on the same excavation site, with the ancient text on the book claiming it to be the Grimoire of Fire.

Personality/Behavior
Katrina before the fateful incident was a simple girl troubled by her circumstances. A young noble who had to handle the difficulties of her position as well as being tormented by unknown visions from time to time. Though she held much respect and authority, Katrina in reality had no wish to even bother over such matters, let alone be in charge of it all. A simple girl who was just curious and eager to delve into the magical arts as much as possible, as well as enjoy the pleasures life could offer in its limits. Or so she thought.

The Day of Tears of Fire changed all that, and affected in many ways simply than at the surface level and would continue to do so long after it ended. Ironically, her former wish was granted in a twisted way though clearly at the cost of changing her very existence as well as being subjected to a unknown frustration born from that day and the hazards of a enormous power she barely had any knowledge of, let alone controlling it.

Before the incident, her visions was hazy and wild at best though long after she found the visions to be as vivid as recalling her own memories. Acceptance slowly set in until she was no longer afraid of the visions, partially because of the degree of control she had now.

Over the long decades, Katrina changed, as decreed by change itself, by the events set forth around her. Being involved and seeing the repetition of mistakes by those around her confused her. Confusion changed into frustration and later, again into acceptance. Such an impact was clearly reflected in her slowly cynical and aggressive manner over time.

As of now, Katrina has grown into a person of many faces but it’s clear at least that she is very much a being of desire and impulses with a unique perception of the world in general. Supremely confident in manner, Katrina has no doubt of her self. Ruthless and focused, Katrina often seeks to obtain what she wants through a number of possible methods rather than the most obvious solution, as she is fond of the planning and manipulation involved. Though she will try things in a roundabout manner, her straightforward manner shows up in demanding what she wants, case in point wrangling information from a certain scientist harboring the greatest of ambitions.

Katrina can switch her demeanor between aggressive and excited to one of complete genteel and calm and back in the next second so reading her is harder than anything else. Her behavior is certainly schizophrenic at times but a sharp and analytical mind is always in control behind whatever façade she may be putting on. Likewise it’s hard to guess when she truly means what she says or when she is simply playing, exploiting the use of words and gestures to their fullest extend, as part of her mind games.

Her manners in disguise often portray her as a polite person, though not always to the point and slightly ditzy as well. Her impulsive side surfaces frequently here with boredom though she has never given the game away. Katrina can blend in so well with her conduct that her vicious and malicious side is something most would never even imagine of her.

On the other hand, Katrina’s dark personality shows through even more brilliantly. A bona fide sadist developed from her long periods of solitude and even longer periods spent on the bloody battlefields of her time. Be it in questioning or fighting, she prefers to give the worst option to her opponents, leaving them with hell or a worst kind of hell one way or another. Ironically, she has the best control of her impulses in this form and her actions are as daring and bold as she is confident. Tempered by her mentality, the slightest hints of impatience only show from time to time though she is never one to worry or be upset even if the situation is unfavorable.

Unpredictable and a wild card in any situation, Katrina remains a formidable force in any encounter. Her most recent and prominent partner is none other than the Orphan of Al Hazard, Jail Scaglietti.

Why they don't try and learn the real thing instead of engaging in magic piracy is beyond me, but I believe it could be either due to

a) the Belkans refused to divulge their secrets to their rivals, or
b) Ancient Belka was lost before the Midchildans could actually learn it, and they are forced to replicate it with whatever information they can get (which could be quite extensive, considering the fact that the Infinite Library is in Midchildan hands).

- I completely agree on these premises on the basis of creation of Neo-Velka (I'm still using the V instead of B for ease of speaking) and also, i have a few thoughts on why the TSAB have chosen to do this.

But then again, Cross Mirage isn't a staff, but rather a one-of-a-kind device). Despite the benefits of the Cartridge system, the difficulty in its use is actually one of the reasons for the decline of the Belkan style.

Besides the Cartridge system, Belka also boast of the ultimate stage in Intelligent Device development: the Unison Device.

(If you ask me, it seems that Belkan researchers tend to come up with the craziest stuff that, while wildly powerful, are also terribly hard to master.)

Katrina completed her primary magical education by age 12, even being able to manage a degree of flight, though still far from the level of control shown by veterans on the battlefield. Among her many achievements and gifts, she was also born with a voice that was described by all as the very ‘voice of the heavens’. Her fame as a songstress spread until she was called upon to act as one in the most unlikely and undesirable of places possible, out on the battlefields.

Katrina performed her duty splendidly though her performance was only a prelude to the beginning, marked by her collapse soon after. When inquired about the incident, she could only explain in bits and pieces what she experienced before her collapse. The surroundings had felt ‘heavy’ and she glimpsed flashes of memories. Memories of other people and all terrible in depiction. The next few years would be marked with frequent occurrences of such, weighing down heavily onto the young girl’s mind, each black-out with increasing clarity and defilement in her mind.

The next few years saw Katrina among the places of other nobles, though none as young as her and already participating in political affairs. Those in doubts and underestimation of the young lady were quickly surprised by her sharp mind and sharper words, honed by tutors and advisors to prepare her for the treacherous realm she was stepping into. Swayed over by her charismatic charm and words, the support of the nobles cemented her previously dubious position of being the youngest noble ever in control of one of the Five Great Houses into one of great power and position.

Things were rapidly going out of control at the frontlines. Nations in conflict grew ever more impatient to either end the fighting or finish the conquest they sought. Desperate measures were implemented in the name of such immediate needs. Various kinds of experimentation on mages to enhance their powers, drugs and chemicals to boost the capabilities of soldiers, deployment of conventional, biological and magical weaponry that devastated everything on the battlefield, wasting both the land and the soldiers from both sides who died on it.

All took a sharp dive towards a downwards spiral when one side broke the sole and unwritten rule common in warfare: Lost Logias as weapons of war.

With that the gloves came off. Each and every battle that involved a Lost Logia brought a swift and overwhelming end and in turn added pressure to the escalating situation. Katrina was ordered to be part of a convoy to transport and guard the Eye of Fire, a highly dangerous and powerful artifact even among Lost Logia, to where a critical area was in danger of being overwhelmed by enemy forces.

The convoy was heavily guarded but enemy forces had gotten wind of the transport nonetheless and had moved to intercept the Lost Logia for themselves. The Eye of Fire was too considered too dangerous to be simply left alone, hence the desperate preemptive strike.

The assault proved to be a much bloodier affair than expected by both sides. Katrina, being the bearer of the Eye, was overwhelmed by the clash and in desperation, channeled all her strength into the Lost Logia in misplaced hopes to end the attack quickly.

The Logia proved too much for Katrina to control, as it soon went on to draw mana from her Linker Core even after being awakened. Going berserk soon after, all in the near vicinity was killed. The fires unleashed were of such strength that the very air on the battlefield turned to a raging inferno and both sides were decimated within minutes. The flames went unquenched, going on to consume the nearby regions as well, sparing nothing within its reach.

The horrific aftermath was explained as the Logia going berserk and destroying itself in the process, consuming regions on both sides of the border. The incident that gave both sides pause about the consequences of dabbling with ancient artifacts recklessly as weapons and even ceased combat for awhile came to be known as the Day of the Tears of Fire.

Amazingly and unknown to others, Katrina was the sole survivor in the incident. Albeit badly burned, Linker Core severely exhausted and near the verge of death. Her subsequent survival later could only be credited to one explanation: The Eye was not destroyed but had somehow fused with her body, enabling her to survive the cataclysmic turn of events.

Though she will try things in a roundabout manner, her straightforward manner shows up in demanding what she wants, case in point wrangling information from a certain scientist harboring the greatest of ambitions.

Katrina can switch her demeanor between aggressive and excited to one of complete genteel and calm and back in the next second so reading her is harder than anything else. Her behavior is certainly schizophrenic at times but a sharp and analytical mind is always in control behind whatever façade she may be putting on. Likewise it’s hard to guess when she truly means what she says or when she is simply playing, exploiting the use of words and gestures to their fullest extend, as part of her mind games.

Her manners in disguise often portray her as a polite person, though not always to the point and slightly ditzy as well. Her impulsive side surfaces frequently here with boredom though she has never given the game away. Katrina can blend in so well with her conduct that her vicious and malicious side is something most would never even imagine of her.

On the other hand, Katrina’s dark personality shows through even more brilliantly. A bona fide sadist developed from her long periods of solitude and even longer periods spent on the bloody battlefields of her time. Be it in questioning or fighting, she prefers to give the worst option to her opponents, leaving them with hell or a worst kind of hell one way or another. Ironically, she has the best control of her impulses in this form and her actions are as daring and bold as she is confident. Tempered by her mentality, the slightest hints of impatience only show from time to time though she is never one to worry or be upset even if the situation is unfavorable.

Unpredictable and a wild card in any situation, Katrina remains a formidable force in any encounter. Her most recent and prominent partner is none other than the Orphan of Al Hazard, Jail Scaglietti.

The two parts of this took much longer than expected and I'm a little mess up right now so some parts may not make sense.

Part 2 of Katrina's profile

Katrina’s partnership with Jail was born out of pure and mutual convenience. Why, where or how they meet is a pure mystery though it is known their partnership begun around MC0065. Katrina regarded Jail as a ambitious man too caught up in his little projects, regarding his cyborgs project with disdain while Jail took interest in her to quite an extent, about as much as he showed in a certain Enforcer as well, though possibly only for the valuable information she could provide for the Numbers. Katrina was not above using her charms to seduce the Doctor into doing what she wanted though Jail was no fool and pared her demands down in accordance to the benefit gained. Their partnership was marked by constant mind games though the two did enjoy some semblance of unlikely harmony throughout, even sharing their views over indulgences sometimes.

When it came down to the basics, both sides had information each other wanted, primarily about Lost Logia in nature, and was exchanged in kind. Jail for the location of the Cradle’s crash site and Katrina for something more intimate to her, much more than she had ever thought of possible that she was honestly surprised until Jail offered the proof and information of her link to the Trinity of Fire.

The Trinity of Fire is collection of three technological artifacts, with their possible origins linking them back to the earliest beginnings of Ancient Belka, and possibly to the every place the orphan hails from when accounted to beyond that. Namely, the Grimoire of Fire, the magic tome storing all the spells and programs. The Staff of Fire, Mastema, a device specifically crafted for the user to wield and channel the spells within the grimoire. Lastly the source and core of the trinity, is the Eye of Fire, currently fused within Katrina’s body.

The artifacts were created to be used together for pure and unadulterated destruction, nearly unmatched by any other Lost Logia in this aspect. Along the way, the tome and the staff was lost among the whirlpool of time, leaving the Eye in the hands of the later generation. Still, the Eye being the source of the trinity, still held devastating destructive potential on its own and was guarded fervently by its protectors and passed on until Katrina’s time.

Katrina was taken aback by the enormity of the revelation, never mind how did Jail had knowledge of the Trinity after being missing for so long. Still she was loathe to extract the exact information from the scientist any more then she had, even though the possibility of him withholding any possible info from her was great. Katrina was quick in her response, wanting Jail to construct a device she could use to maximize the Eye’s power, basically reconstructing Mastema in its near entirety. Strangely, the scientist consented to her demands without so much of an idea of how the device even looked like.

Unsurprisingly, Jail was unable to reconstruct Mastema to the point which Katrina could utilize, given her unique condition. Very much dissatisfied for both, Jail came up with an alternative after Katrina’s taunts and questioning of his abilities. Knowing the enigmatic girl was unable to use any device, his alternative was the creation of a form-changing weapon though strictly not a device as the construct had absolutely no AI installed and did not draw on Katrina’s mana to change forms.

The weapon was completed shortly after Katrina’s return from her search attempts. Upon her return, she received news about the actual whereabouts of the tome and the staff. Supposedly, the Grimoire of Fire had been discovered on Mid-Childa and stolen shortly after being excavated at a dig nearly two years ago, around the same time she learned of their existence.

Slightly ticked off by the news, Katrina was about to immediately resume her search when Jail’s research facility was attacked by a team of TSAB forces. Though amused by the fact the lab was attacked by the underlings of his backers, Katrina was persuaded by the good doctor to give him some valuable data for the development of his little pet project, the combat cyborgs known later on as the Numbers, in exchange for his service of providing her with an invaluable weapon.

Though she could be less bothered about the scientist’s production facility, Katrina did saw an ample opportunity for some combat after so long. The drones had managed to take out most of the intruders and Cinque, the only Number on hand was already engaging a Belkan knight in a ferocious one-on-one. Though she would have preferred taking on the knight, Katrina was not one to intrude on the fight of another and left the two to their devices. The only worthy opponents left were the other two survivors currently cornered by a horde of drones. Unwilling to let her prey be claimed by the robotic gadgets, she quickly arrived at the scene.

Wiping out the remainder of the drones not destroyed by the duo, Katrina finally managed to face the mages. One a summoner, and the other a mage dual wielding gauntlet devices. Hardly a challenge in her opinion though that both her opponents were female were of some consolation since it had been a long time since Katrina had managed to fight a female opponent strong enough to satisfy her. She was expecting they did not disappoint. With Espada in her hands, she took the duo on.

The mages lived up to her mark but it was clear they would not last longer and Katrina was eager to finish them off. A final charge by both down the narrow room was promptly reversed when Katrina impaled the summoner with Espada on the far walls before turning her attention to the other mage. Megane was unable to do anything but watched helplessly as her companion-in-arms was brutally taken down by Katrina.

Katrina was enjoying every last bit of the fight as she stood over the prone form that was now Quint. Katrina’s words to the defeated mage was nothing short of a vicious taunt.

“I would applaud your actions, if they weren’t so futile right from the start. At the very least, you have given me some satisfaction today. Now then, how would you prefer I send you to the Saint? Slowly so that I can enjoy myself even more or perhaps so fast you won’t even realize you’re gone?”

Quint’s final exchange with Katrina was deeper than any injury suffered during the fight.

“Do as you like. It does not matter now how I should die, for at least I know I shall lived on in the hearts of those close to me, through Ginga, Subaru and Genya. I pity you instead, for those crimson eyes of yours struggle to hide much pain and sorrow in life while mine will hold hopes for my family even until the end.”

The woman had bested more than a hundred soldiers with her words alone, showing courage and strength in the face of death, so unlike the mages Katrina had fought and who had swore to die for their country but all which screamed like babies as they were cut down.

Katrina was impressed though her only reaction was a bitter smile before she left the room, leaving Quint to her fate. She teleported off-planet soon after to bury herself in the efforts of the renewed search.

Jail Scaglietti was overjoyed by the results even though his lab was just about destroyed. Cinque had taken down Zest Grangeitz and managed to secure two valuable bases for his other project, the Experimental Relic Weapons. Most of all was the invaluable data gathered from Cinque and Katrina’s fight, securing invaluable combat data for the future Numbers.

Katrina would only return again after two years of nearly fruitless searching and only because she sought Jail’s reliable information sources. Arriving at his cave hide-out, Katrina met a silent and taciturn girl while waiting for confirmation of the news from the scientist. She look upon the girl and saw a trace of herself within the little Lutecia. Out of curiosity, she found out the girl took after her mother, being exceptionally talented in summoning.

On a whim, Katrina took Luteica into her hands for a short while, teaching the young girl the basics of the Belka-style of summoning. Strangely, Katrina assisted in Lutecia’s first summon, bringing forth a humanoid insect droid, which Lutecia named Garyuu after twenty unsuccessful tries.

Katrina left the very next day, having obtained the information she needed. Noted was how Lutecia attempted to use her newly learned summoning spell to go after the departing girl. Katrina managed to stop the rash action and offered a small smile at the purple-haired summoner before leaving.

Onwards to what the girl is capable of.

The Eye of Fire accounts for a large portion of Katrina’s abilities, foremost her increased regeneration abilities and to a degree, her ageless body. Her regeneration abilities are equal to some of the strongest healing spells known, as well as making her impervious to most ailments and sicknesses. Though very beneficial, Katrina is not immortal. Any lost limbs, punctured heart and decapitation are permanent and will kill her though she can recover from slightly less severe injuries such as ruptured organs or punctured lungs.

Katrina now also commands the element of fire as well as retaining her natural born affinity towards water/ice spells, granting her the unique status of dual-wielding two elements at one go. It can be considered fire is now her dominant element and water/ice, while being her natural affinity, is now relegated to her weaker element. Of note is that after the fusing of the Eye into her body, Katrina had to start over as a mage, owning to the clash over the sudden inclusion of another element into her body. Ironically enough, she had much better control over her magic now and so picked up skills faster than she had as a normal mage, enabling her to learn more skills in the same amount of time than she did before.

This of course showed in her skills, as she now possessed an unsurpassed degree of control in forming and manipulating her spells than any other mage of her time.

Katrina’s control improved beyond simply in her magical skills. Her previously wild and violent visions are now clear and regulated, and with some practice Katrina even created a “on-off” button, so to speak in regulating the usage of her unique skill.

Going in-depth to her Rare Skill, if it could be defined as one, Katrina can “see” the dark memories of people, and to a lesser degree experience the scene exactly as it happened. Memories, feelings and emotions tied to negative events in general humans kept hidden away and locked in the deepest recesses of their minds, nothing and no one was safe from this deeply intense intrusion of their privacy so long as Katrina chose to pick them as a target.

The physical aspects of her skill include some other effects as well. Katrina can choose to focus on an individual or a group of people within an area, as long as they are within 18 meters of her. Tell tale signs when she is using her skill are the commonly felt unpleasant sensations and heavy atmosphere of those being subjected to it. Ranging from simply feeling unwell to feelings of dread and panic in between, and if sufficient time passes, suffering temporal breakdowns at the extreme. Katrina is on the receiving end as well if she keeps it up beyond fifteen minutes, possibly being strongly affected and distracted by her victims’ memories enough to suffer a grievous injury. She has developed a level of resistance, numbed after so much exposure though the real threat is possible insanity if she attempts to take on too many people at one go.

Usage is rather limited in combat, other than simply unnerving her opponents with the information she uses as taunts to agitate them and create an opening she can exploit to take them down.

With the initial fusion of the Eye consuming a large portion of her mana, Katrina was forced to invoke upon a rather vicious ability of the Eye: draining Linker Cores to fill up her own mana reserves. Her early victims included magical beasts and later on mages though in time that need has been nullified as Katrina’s Linker Core eventually adapted to the risk of being consumed by the Eye itself. Similar to Book of Darkness in that the Eye is able to drain a Core down to a minute size as well, the Eye differs in that it can drain the Core to the point of collapse, effectively crippling any mage if Katrina so chooses to. The limitations of the absorption would be the presence of any kind of magical defense would cut short the process.

Of all the benefits the Eye provided, there are drawbacks as well. Katrina cannot use any device at all, owning to the fact that any device she channels mana into promptly explodes into a brilliant fireball so she’s stripped of the advantages of being a device wielder. Being a device-less mage, she has to manually form and maintain each spell she casts, including the most basic of flight spells, in addition to being unable to use the highly complex spells that would require the support of a device. She has no problems dumping out raw mana in large quantities though. Katrina has managed to alleviate the problem somewhat, owing to her vast accumulated battlefield experience and higher than average control abilities she possesses, including certain tricks to even the odds in combat.

Katrina is sufficiently proficient in weapons skills, having used various kinds of armed devices purely for physical strikes and parries though this often pales when exchanging blows with other cartridge-enhance device wielders. As such she is forced to engage in range combat most of the times, something she was at a disadvantage until she used the Mid-system to supplement her style though still paling in comparison when standing off at range with a sufficiently proficient Mid mage.

Over time, Katrina picked up and perfected her dagger skills, being a expert in both using them as projectile weapons or engaging in melee combat with them. She is highly accurate and often dual-wields the daggers until she hurls them straight at her target or used as an inefficient exploding projectile when charged with her mana.

Moving on to her magical arts, Katrina has perfected her usage of spells over time. In addition to possessing very high control, her spells has been reduced to minimum strain and maximum output though her output remains poor in complex spells. Katrina is a natural born illusionist and soon specialized in particle manipulation as well, putting her high degree of control to great use in relatively simple spells such as binds and defensive measures.

The Eye’s influence shows up here again. Primarily, Katrina’s magic color is silver until she invokes upon the Eye of Fire’s destructive abilities, whereby it turns bright red. That is often the case when she experiences bloodlust as well. Most prominently, Katrina’s fire spells has some vicious attributes. The fire from her resulting spell is very resilient and sticks to anything for a long time, much like olden napalm. It also spreads at frightening speed in the presence of mana rich environments, attributing to its ability to use the surrounding mana particles to fuel its growth. As such, it’s particularly effective at breaking down magical defenses such as barriers and barrier jackets, burning many mages alive who were often over-reliant on their magical defenses to tide them through.

Her ice spells remain decent though their output fluctuates from time to time, especially when Katrina is heavily reliant on fire spells and she suddenly uses an ice spell, often resulting in the spell being much weaker than usual.

Over time, Katrina picked up the Belkan-style summoning skills and later on the Mid-system of magic as well. Strangely, her skills in summoning are rather limited and Katrina is only able to summon ice elementals under the branch of summoning forth creatures.

Though able to utilize both systems efficiently, her own attempts to fuse spells between the two systems has proven less than ideal at times. Case in point, Katrina nearly killed herself when she mixed in the Belkan-style of teleport-summons with a certain Mid spell-style. Attempting the spell beforehand on a lizard resulted in only the top of it being teleported, which gave even her the creeps back then. Failures aside, successful attempts at fusing spells and styles together has given unique results from time to time.

Katrina can hold her own in melee against most Belkan knights, owning to weapon skills and reflexes honed by experience. In fairly recent times she has included the use of the weapon given to her by Jail as part of her melee fighting style. Surtr, renamed from its original Espada, has four different forms to match her needs and restrains. It can take the form of a rapier, a claymore, a katana or an nodachi. Each form change requires mana expenditure equal to one cartridge and Sutr is limited to the equivalent of 3 cartridges before it runs dry. Any attempts to use her own mana to charge Surtr will result in yet another fiery explosion so Katrina refrains from that.

Katrina’s barrier jacket has two forms, depending on the situation she will change into the appropriate form.

Silver Form: the jacket’s primary form when Katrina engages in combat. Covers the entire body from neck to toe and features better protection around the shoulder and waist areas. Offers better defense and suited for mid to long range fighting.

Spectral Form: the jacket shrinks down to a skin tight piece, alternating between black and white as the main color. Fingerless gloves and shoe parts are bare and slightly detached to allow ease of rotation Gold and red lines primarily go down the right extremities of the jacket. Defensive values take a big drop here as it is designed for easier concealment as well as ease of movement at close to melee range combat. An interesting thing to note that the lines currently only cover 60% of the total jacket’s area though whether if that is of any importance remains to be seen.

Quint’s final exchange with Katrina was deeper than any injury suffered during the fight.

“Do as you like. It does not matter now how I should die, for at least I know I shall lived on in the hearts of those close to me, through Ginga, Subaru and Genya. I pity you instead, for those crimson eyes of yours struggle to hide much pain and sorrow in life while mine will hold hopes for my family even until the end.”

The woman had bested more than a hundred soldiers with her words alone, showing courage and strength in the face of death, so unlike the mages Katrina had fought and who had swore to die for their country but all which screamed like babies as they were cut down.

Katrina’s only reaction was only a bitter smile before quickly leaving the room and shortly after, teleporting off-planet to bury herself in the efforts of the renewed search.

Jail Scaglietti was overjoyed by the results even though his lab was just about destroyed. Cinque had taken down Zest Grangeitz and managed to secure two valuable bases for his other project, the Experimental Relic Weapons. Most of all was the invaluable data gathered from Cinque and Katrina’s fight, securing invaluable combat data for the future Numbers.

Katrina would only return again after two years of nearly fruitless searching and only because she sought Jail’s reliable information sources. Arriving at his cave hide-out, Katrina met a silent and taciturn girl while waiting for confirmation of the news from the scientist. She look upon the girl and saw a trace of herself within the little Lutecia. Out of curiosity, she found out the girl took after her mother, being exceptionally talented in summoning.

On a whim, Katrina took Luteica into her hands for a short while, teaching the young girl the basics of the Belka-style of summoning. Strangely, Katrina assisted in Lutecia’s first summon, bringing forth a humanoid insect droid, which Lutecia named Garyuu after twenty unsuccessful tries.

Katrina left the very next day, having obtained the information she needed. Noted was how Lutecia attempted to use her newly learned summoning spell to go after the departing girl. Katrina managed to stop the rash action and offered a small smile at the purple-haired summoner before leaving.

Onwards to what the girl is capable of.

Abilities/Skills

The Eye of Fire accounts for a large portion of Katrina’s abilities, foremost her increased regeneration abilities and to a degree, her ageless body. Her regeneration abilities are equal to some of the strongest healing spells known, as well as making her impervious to most ailments and sicknesses. Though very beneficial, Katrina is not immortal. Any lost limbs, punctured heart and decapitation are permanent and will kill her though she can recover from slightly less severe injuries such as ruptured organs or punctured lungs.

Katrina now also commands the element of fire as well as retaining her natural born affinity towards water/ice spells, granting her the unique status of dual-wielding two elements at one go. It can be considered fire is now her dominant element and water/ice, while being her natural affinity, is now relegated to her weaker element. Of note is that after the fusing of the Eye into her body, Katrina had to start over as a mage, owning to the clash over the sudden inclusion of another element into her body. Ironically enough, she had much better control over her magic now and so picked up skills faster than she had as a normal mage, enabling her to learn more skills in the same amount of time than she did before.

This of course showed in her skills, as she now possessed an unsurpassed degree of control in forming and manipulating her spells than any other mage of her time.

Katrina’s control improved beyond simply in her magical skills. Her previously wild and violent visions are now clear and regulated, and with some practice Katrina even created a “on-off” button, so to speak in regulating the usage of her unique skill.

Going in-depth to her Rare Skill, if it could be defined as one, Katrina can “see” the dark memories of people, and to a lesser degree experience the scene exactly as it happened. Memories, feelings and emotions tied to negative events in general humans kept hidden away and locked in the deepest recesses of their minds, nothing and no one was safe from this deeply intense intrusion of their privacy so long as Katrina chose to pick them as a target.

The physical aspects of her skill include some other effects as well. Katrina can choose to focus on an individual or a group of people within an area, as long as they are within 18 meters of her. Tell tale signs when she is using her skill are the commonly felt unpleasant sensations and heavy atmosphere of those being subjected to it. Ranging from simply feeling unwell to feelings of dread and panic in between, and if sufficient time passes, suffering temporal breakdowns at the extreme. Katrina is on the receiving end as well if she keeps it up beyond fifteen minutes, possibly being strongly affected and distracted by her victims’ memories enough to suffer a grievous injury. She has developed a level of resistance, numbed after so much exposure though the real threat is possible insanity if she attempts to take on too many people at one go.

Usage is rather limited in combat, other than simply unnerving her opponents with the information she uses as taunts to agitate them and create an opening she can exploit to take them down.

With the initial fusion of the Eye consuming a large portion of her mana, Katrina was forced to invoke upon a rather vicious ability of the Eye: draining Linker Cores to fill up her own mana reserves. Her early victims included magical beasts and later on mages though in time that need has been nullified as Katrina’s Linker Core eventually adapted to the risk of being consumed by the Eye itself. Similar to Book of Darkness in that the Eye is able to drain a Core down to a minute size as well, the Eye differs in that it can drain the Core to the point of collapse, effectively crippling any mage if Katrina so chooses to. The limitations of the absorption would be the presence of any kind of magical defense would cut short the process.

Of all the benefits the Eye provided, there are drawbacks as well. Katrina cannot use any device at all, owning to the fact that any device she channels mana into promptly explodes into a brilliant fireball so she’s stripped of the advantages of being a device wielder. Being a device-less mage, she has to manually form and maintain each spell she casts, including the most basic of flight spells, in addition to being unable to use the highly complex spells that would require the support of a device. She has no problems dumping out raw mana in large quantities though. Katrina has managed to alleviate the problem somewhat, owing to her vast accumulated battlefield experience and higher than average control abilities she possesses, including certain tricks to even the odds in combat.

Katrina is sufficiently proficient in weapons skills, having used various kinds of armed devices purely for physical strikes and parries though this often pales when exchanging blows with other cartridge-enhance device wielders. As such she is forced to engage in range combat most of the times, something she was at a disadvantage until she used the Mid-system to supplement her style though still paling in comparison when standing off at range with a sufficiently proficient Mid mage.

Over time, Katrina picked up and perfected her dagger skills, being a expert in both using them as projectile weapons or engaging in melee combat with them. She is highly accurate and often dual-wields the daggers until she hurls them straight at her target or used as an inefficient exploding projectile when charged with her mana.

Moving on to her magical arts, Katrina has perfected her usage of spells over time. In addition to possessing very high control, her spells has been reduced to minimum strain and maximum output though her output remains poor in complex spells. Katrina is a natural born illusionist and soon specialized in particle manipulation as well, putting her high degree of control to great use in relatively simple spells such as binds and defensive measures.

The Eye’s influence shows up here again. Primarily, Katrina’s magic color is silver until she invokes upon the Eye of Fire’s destructive abilities, whereby it turns bright red. That is often the case when she experiences bloodlust as well. Most prominently, Katrina’s fire spells has some vicious attributes. The fire from her resulting spell is very resilient and sticks to anything for a long time, much like olden napalm. It also spreads at frightening speed in the presence of mana rich environments, attributing to its ability to use the surrounding mana particles to fuel its growth. As such, it’s particularly effective at breaking down magical defenses such as barriers and barrier jackets, burning many mages alive who were often over-reliant on their magical defenses to tide them through.

Her ice spells remain decent though their output fluctuates from time to time, especially when Katrina is heavily reliant on fire spells and she suddenly uses an ice spell, often resulting in the spell being much weaker than usual.

Over time, Katrina picked up the Belkan-style summoning skills and later on the Mid-system of magic as well. Strangely, her skills in summoning are rather limited and Katrina is only able to summon ice elementals under the branch of summoning forth creatures.

Though able to utilize both systems efficiently, her own attempts to fuse spells between the two systems has proven less than ideal at times. Case in point, Katrina nearly killed herself when she mixed in the Belkan-style of teleport-summons with a certain Mid spell-style. Attempting the spell beforehand on a lizard resulted in only the top of it being teleported, which gave even her the creeps back then. Failures aside, successful attempts at fusing spells and styles together has given unique results from time to time.

Katrina can hold her own in melee against most Belkan knights, owning to weapon skills and reflexes honed by experience. In fairly recent times she has included the use of the weapon given to her by Jail as part of her melee fighting style. Surtr, renamed from its original Espada, has four different forms to match her needs and restrains. It can take the form of a rapier, a claymore, a katana or an nodachi. Each form change requires mana expenditure equal to one cartridge and Sutr is limited to the equivalent of 3 cartridges before it runs dry. Any attempts to use her own mana to charge Surt will result in yet another fiery explosion so Katrina refrains from that.

Katrina’s barrier jacket has two forms, depending on the situation she will change into the appropriate form.

Swan Form: the jacket’s primary form when Katrina engages in combat. Covers the entire body from neck to toe and features better protection around the shoulder and waist areas. Offers better defense and suited for mid to long range fighting.
Swallow Form: the jacket shrinks down to a skin tight piece. Fingerless gloves and shoe parts are bare and slightly detached to allow ease of rotation Gold and red lines primarily go down the right extremities of the jacket. Defensive values take a big drop here as it is designed for easier concealment as well as ease of movement at close to melee range combat. An interesting thing to note that the lines currently only cover 60% of the total jacket’s area though whether if that is of any importance remains to be seen.

The succecion of skills makes Keroko learning Teana how to fly even more valid, Nanoha's corrosion made me sweatdrop when I compared it to Ethereal Mode, even though it does pretty much solidify Keroko's corrosion. (which reminds me, I've got to make sure Keroko doesn't get away scot free from that either) and the information on Vivio's school is much needed info for Syn.

At least bears are cool about stealing your trash sure it blows when they tear your metal trash cans in half to get at the garbage, but come on they tore a metal trash can in half! Just having the shredded can to show off almost makes up for the effort of cleaning the mess! Bears are just awesome in general though... I'm pretty sure I've mentioned I like bears before though.

Her sole joy was in studies of the magical arts, showing great aptitude for it as well. The young child, in rare displays of mischief, would trip or alter the appearance of her many tutors, often to their bemused misfortune. She would go on to find her interests struck by song and music in time.

Even at a tender age, Katrina had her exposure of affairs beyond her. Between her many studies and the history of the world, Katrina could not fully comprehend the workings of why people sought the political and warfare of their time, which only brought ceaseless conflict and turmoil, though evident the outcomes would be. Her own answers, though inadequate for now, would have a deeper effect on her mindset in the future.

Katrina completed her primary magical education by age 12, even being able to manage a degree of flight, though still far from the level of control shown by veterans on the battlefield. Among her many achievements and gifts, she was also born with a voice that was described by all as the very ‘voice of the heavens’. Her fame as a songstress spread until she was called upon to act as one in the most unlikely and undesirable of places possible, out on the battlefields.

Katrina performed her duty splendidly though her performance was only a prelude to the beginning, marked by her collapse soon after. When inquired about the incident, she could only explain in bits and pieces what she experienced before her collapse. The surroundings had felt ‘heavy’ and she glimpsed flashes of memories. Memories of other people and all terrible in depiction. The next few years would be marked with frequent occurrences of such, weighing down heavily onto the young girl’s mind, each black-out with increasing clarity and defilement in her mind.

The next few years saw Katrina among the places of other nobles, though none as young as her and already participating in political affairs. Those in doubts and underestimation of the young lady were quickly surprised by her sharp mind and sharper words, honed by tutors and advisors to prepare her for the treacherous realm she was stepping into. Swayed over by her charismatic charm and words, the support of the nobles cemented her previously dubious position of being the youngest noble ever in control of one of the Five Great Houses into one of great power and position.

Being in the place of such people did not sit well with her though, for she had heard and in some cases, saw the deeds they had done, which brought disgust and repulsion of no end to her. Considering it a necessary evil, she partook in working with them in the name of the empire to her fullest extent while in reality she had no wish of any of this other than to fulfill the duty she had to carry in her stead of her parents.

The maturing young girl’s joys remained in the practice of magic, and indulgence with song and music in her secluded mansion retreat deep within some of the most beautiful areas on the planet whenever the chance arose. Those were the few things that gave her much-needed moments of quiet tranquility among the ugliness of humans, the former becoming increasingly rare as she learned more of the latter.

Things were rapidly going out of control at the frontlines. Nations in conflict grew ever more impatient to either end the fighting or finish the conquest they sought. Desperate measures were implemented in the name of such immediate needs. Various kinds of experimentation on mages to enhance their powers, drugs and chemicals to boost the capabilities of soldiers, deployment of conventional, biological and magical weaponry that devastated everything on the battlefield, wasting both the land and the soldiers from both sides who died on it.

All took a sharp dive towards a downwards spiral when one side broke the sole and unwritten rule common in warfare: Lost Logias as weapons of war.

With that the gloves came off. Each and every battle that involved a Lost Logia brought a swift and overwhelming end and in turn added pressure to the escalating situation. Katrina was ordered to be part of a convoy to transport and guard the Eye of Fire, a highly dangerous and powerful artifact even among Lost Logia, to where a critical area was in danger of being overwhelmed by enemy forces.

The convoy was heavily guarded but enemy forces had gotten wind of the transport nonetheless and had moved to intercept the Lost Logia for themselves. The Eye of Fire was too considered too dangerous to be simply left alone, hence the desperate preemptive strike.

The assault proved to be a much bloodier affair than expected by both sides. Katrina, being the bearer of the Eye, was overwhelmed by the clash and in desperation, channeled all her strength into the Lost Logia in misplaced hopes to end the attack quickly.

The Logia proved too much for Katrina to control, as it soon went on to draw mana from her Linker Core even after being awakened. Going berserk soon after, all in the near vicinity was killed. The fires unleashed were of such strength that the very air on the battlefield turned to a raging inferno and both sides were decimated within minutes. The flames went unquenched, going on to consume the nearby regions as well, sparing nothing within its reach.

The horrific aftermath was explained as the Logia going berserk and destroying itself in the process, consuming regions on both sides of the border. The incident that gave both sides pause about the consequences of dabbling with ancient artifacts recklessly as weapons and even ceased combat for awhile came to be known as the Day of the Tears of Fire.

Amazingly and unknown to others, Katrina was the sole survivor in the incident. Albeit badly burned, Linker Core severely exhausted and near the verge of death. Her subsequent survival later could only be credited to one explanation: The Eye was not destroyed but had somehow fused with her body, enabling her to survive the cataclysmic turn of events.

Still, the after effects were yet to come. Barely alive, Katrina could not exert control over the Eye that was now within her, every so often setting something ablaze or even her body sometimes. Enduring excruciating pain at the torture of her body, it took days for her complete recovery and several weeks of intensive meditation to develop the necessary restrain to safeguard herself.

Katrina knew that it would be better for her to remain dead and missing otherwise to face some very tough questions she would have to answer. Her status of a Lost Logia-infused mage would also be subjected to close scrutiny if she ever returned to her country, which certainly would include the scientists eager to study her as a freak experiment. Without much of a choice left, she hid herself at the edge of the empire, living in isolation.

One thing became increasingly apparent to Katrina as the days went by. The young woman had effectively stopped aging since the fateful day, another attribute that could only be explained by the fusion of the Lost Logia into her body. For good or for worse, Katrina was now free to explore and learn more magic skills than any other mage could in their lifetimes now that time was no longer a concern to her frame.

The fighting and unrest continued meanwhile. The use of Lost Logia as weapons reached its climax several decades after with the deployment of the Cradle of the Saint King by the Belkan Empire. The Cradle returned so badly damaged that it crashed shortly there after. With planetary wide fighting going on, few knew of the Cradle’s return save for the mages that happened to be fighting near its crash site. Katrina was in the nearby region making short work of deserter mages from the Empire when the Cradle fell in the distance.

The next century and a half bore witness to the darker histories of Mid-Childa as the entire planet subsequently descended into anarchy with the collapse of the Belkan Empire. Taking it as a great opportunity to test her limits, Katrina was involved in a fair amount of fighting and burned many fortresses to the ground, ironically many which were defended by her fellow Belkans. The fighting ravaged on until the founding of the TSAB some seventy five years later. Serving the need to stop the decades old fighting and bring the warring factions under a single authority, the period was marked as the Reunification Wars, during which Katrina partook in some of the most intense battles to have ever been fought on Mid-Childan soil. Eventually the fighting died down and the period of rebuilding the devastated planet begun as well as ushering in the establishment of the TSAB control over Mid-Childa.

With the end of the fighting, Mid-Childa no longer held interest for Katrina and she left the planet, though she came back and left several times after her first departure, for reasons unknown.
Returning from her latest trip, a certain discovery came to her attention. A recent archeological dig yielded some pretty interesting artifacts, of which among the Jewel Seeds initially unearthed by the Scrya clan, an old magical tome was also discovered on the same excavation site, with the ancient text on the book claiming it to be the Grimoire of Fire.

Personality/Behavior
Katrina before the fateful incident was a simple girl troubled by her circumstances. A young noble who had to handle the difficulties of her position as well as being tormented by unknown visions from time to time. Though she held much respect and authority, Katrina in reality had no wish to even bother over such matters, let alone be in charge of it all. A simple girl who was just curious and eager to delve into the magical arts as much as possible, as well as enjoy the pleasures life could offer in its limits. Or so she thought.

The Day of Tears of Fire changed all that, and affected in many ways simply than at the surface level and would continue to do so long after it ended. Ironically, her former wish was granted in a twisted way though clearly at the cost of changing her very existence as well as being subjected to a unknown frustration born from that day and the hazards of a enormous power she barely had any knowledge of, let alone controlling it.

Before the incident, her visions was hazy and wild at best though long after she found the visions to be as vivid as recalling her own memories. Acceptance slowly set in until she was no longer afraid of the visions, partially because of the degree of control she had now.

Over the long decades, Katrina changed, as decreed by change itself, by the events set forth around her. Being involved and seeing the repetition of mistakes by those around her confused her. Confusion changed into frustration and later, again into acceptance. Such an impact was clearly reflected in her slowly cynical and aggressive manner over time.

As of now, Katrina has grown into a person of many faces but it’s clear at least that she is very much a being of desire and impulses with a unique perception of the world in general. Supremely confident in manner, Katrina has no doubt of her self. Ruthless and focused, Katrina often seeks to obtain what she wants through a number of possible methods rather than the most obvious solution, as she is fond of the planning and manipulation involved. Though she will try things in a roundabout manner, her straightforward manner shows up in demanding what she wants, case in point wrangling information from a certain scientist harboring the greatest of ambitions.

Katrina can switch her demeanor between aggressive and excited to one of complete genteel and calm and back in the next second so reading her is harder than anything else. Her behavior is certainly schizophrenic at times but a sharp and analytical mind is always in control behind whatever façade she may be putting on. Likewise it’s hard to guess when she truly means what she says or when she is simply playing, exploiting the use of words and gestures to their fullest extend, as part of her mind games.

Her manners in disguise often portray her as a polite person, though not always to the point and slightly ditzy as well. Her impulsive side surfaces frequently here with boredom though she has never given the game away. Katrina can blend in so well with her conduct that her vicious and malicious side is something most would never even imagine of her.

On the other hand, Katrina’s dark personality shows through even more brilliantly. A bona fide sadist developed from her long periods of solitude and even longer periods spent on the bloody battlefields of her time. Be it in questioning or fighting, she prefers to give the worst option to her opponents, leaving them with hell or a worst kind of hell one way or another. Ironically, she has the best control of her impulses in this form and her actions are as daring and bold as she is confident. Tempered by her mentality, the slightest hints of impatience only show from time to time though she is never one to worry or be upset even if the situation is unfavorable.

Unpredictable and a wild card in any situation, Katrina remains a formidable force in any encounter. Her most recent and prominent partner is none other than the Orphan of Al Hazard, Jail Scaglietti.

Sipping a cup of coffee, Saga looked at Hayate's mildly withdrawn self, as she too, sipped her coffee. Even though she knew, even though others had said so, she cannot help but feel that pressure.

It was not of her abilities, but it was she who had gotten the praise for it. Genya and Acous both told her that to understand that, was a step itself and she should not take it too hard, just as she should not take her victory for granted. She was still young, so Genya said.

"Sometimes, I feel that, would someone else had been better? When it comes a time when I would have to take a command of my own again, be it of my choice or not, do I have what it takes?"

Clang. Placing his cup of coffee down, Saga adjusted his glasses, as he took them down.

"This may sound a little rude, Yagami-taichou. May I?"

"It's a harsh comparison. Not everyone can be a leader like that, and some has to be crueler, depending on the times. To be able to draw the line between treating your comrades as tools, or to value them... it differs for each people. Expectations, necessities, nothing is always as one would wish. To value a stranger or family... becoming a leader means having to make painful choices, especially if you choose to go higher, to save more people just as you kill more."

Nice! Indeed, the leaders are the one credited the most in these types of situations. And the lower-ranked people tend to be unmentioned. But that's part of the role people play in the force. Recognition is not really much of an issue if the soldier understands his/her importance as one of many, and a leader should do just as Saga said.

Katrina’s partnership with Jail was born out of pure and mutual convenience. Why, where or how they meet is a pure mystery though it is known their partnership begun around MC0065. Katrina regarded Jail as a ambitious man too caught up in his little projects, regarding his cyborgs project with disdain while Jail took interest in her to quite an extent, about as much as he showed in a certain Enforcer as well, though possibly only for the valuable information she could provide for the Numbers. Katrina was not above using her charms to seduce the Doctor into doing what she wanted though Jail was no fool and pared her demands down in accordance to the benefit gained. Their partnership was marked by constant mind games though the two did enjoy some semblance of unlikely harmony throughout, even sharing their views over indulgences sometimes.

When it came down to the basics, both sides had information each other wanted, primarily about Lost Logia in nature, and was exchanged in kind. Jail for the location of the Cradle’s crash site and Katrina for something more intimate to her, much more than she had ever thought of possible that she was honestly surprised until Jail offered the proof and information of her link to the Trinity of Fire.

The Trinity of Fire is collection of three technological artifacts, with their possible origins linking them back to the earliest beginnings of Ancient Belka, and possibly to the every place the orphan hails from when accounted to beyond that. Namely, the Grimoire of Fire, the magic tome storing all the spells and programs. The Staff of Fire, Mastema, a device specifically crafted for the user to wield and channel the spells within the grimoire. Lastly the source and core of the trinity, is the Eye of Fire, currently fused within Katrina’s body.

The artifacts were created to be used together for pure and unadulterated destruction, nearly unmatched by any other Lost Logia in this aspect. Along the way, the tome and the staff was lost among the whirlpool of time, leaving the Eye in the hands of the later generation. Still, the Eye being the source of the trinity, still held devastating destructive potential on its own and was guarded fervently by its protectors and passed on until Katrina’s time.

Katrina was taken aback by the enormity of the revelation, never mind how did Jail had knowledge of the Trinity after being missing for so long. Still she was loathe to extract the exact information from the scientist any more then she had, even though the possibility of him withholding any possible info from her was great. Katrina was quick in her response, wanting Jail to construct a device she could use to maximize the Eye’s power, basically reconstructing Mastema in its near entirety. Strangely, the scientist consented to her demands without so much of an idea of how the device even looked like.

Unsurprisingly, Jail was unable to reconstruct Mastema to the point which Katrina could utilize, given her unique condition. Very much dissatisfied for both, Jail came up with an alternative after Katrina’s taunts and questioning of his abilities. Knowing the enigmatic girl was unable to use any device, his alternative was the creation of a form-changing weapon though strictly not a device as the construct had absolutely no AI installed and did not draw on Katrina’s mana to change forms.

The weapon was completed shortly after Katrina’s return from her search attempts. Upon her return, she received news about the actual whereabouts of the tome and the staff. Supposedly, the Grimoire of Fire had been discovered on Mid-Childa and stolen shortly after being excavated at a dig nearly two years ago, around the same time she learned of their existence.

Slightly ticked off by the news, Katrina was about to immediately resume her search when Jail’s research facility was attacked by a team of TSAB forces. Though amused by the fact the lab was attacked by the underlings of his backers, Katrina was persuaded by the good doctor to give him some valuable data for the development of his little pet project, the combat cyborgs known later on as the Numbers, in exchange for his service of providing her with an invaluable weapon.

Though she could be less bothered about the scientist’s production facility, Katrina did saw an ample opportunity for some combat after so long. The drones had managed to take out most of the intruders and Cinque, the only Number on hand was already engaging a Belkan knight in a ferocious one-on-one. Though she would have preferred taking on the knight, Katrina was not one to intrude on the fight of another and left the two to their devices. The only worthy opponents left were the other two survivors currently cornered by a horde of drones. Unwilling to let her prey be claimed by the robotic gadgets, she quickly arrived at the scene.

Wiping out the remainder of the drones not destroyed by the duo, Katrina finally managed to face the mages. One a summoner, and the other a mage dual wielding gauntlet devices. Hardly a challenge in her opinion though that both her opponents were female were of some consolation since it had been a long time since Katrina had managed to fight a female opponent strong enough to satisfy her. She was expecting they did not disappoint. With Espada in her hands, she took the duo on.

The mages lived up to her mark but it was clear they would not last longer and Katrina was eager to finish them off. A final charge by both down the narrow room was promptly reversed when Katrina impaled the summoner with Espada on the far walls before turning her attention to the other mage. Megane was unable to do anything but watched helplessly as her companion-in-arms was brutally taken down by Katrina.

Katrina was enjoying every last bit of the fight as she stood over the prone form that was now Quint. Katrina’s words to the defeated mage was nothing short of a vicious taunt.

“I would applaud your actions, if they weren’t so futile right from the start. At the very least, you have given me some satisfaction today. Now then, how would you prefer I send you to the Saint? Slowly so that I can enjoy myself even more or perhaps so fast you won’t even realize you’re gone?”

Quint’s final exchange with Katrina was deeper than any injury suffered during the fight.

“Do as you like. It does not matter now how I should die, for at least I know I shall lived on in the hearts of those close to me, through Ginga, Subaru and Genya. I pity you instead, for those crimson eyes of yours struggle to hide much pain and sorrow in life while mine will hold hopes for my family even until the end.”

The woman had bested more than a hundred soldiers with her words alone, showing courage and strength in the face of death, so unlike the mages Katrina had fought and who had swore to die for their country but all which screamed like babies as they were cut down.

Katrina was impressed though her only reaction was a bitter smile before she left the room, leaving Quint to her fate. She teleported off-planet soon after to bury herself in the efforts of the renewed search.

Jail Scaglietti was overjoyed by the results even though his lab was just about destroyed. Cinque had taken down Zest Grangeitz and managed to secure two valuable bases for his other project, the Experimental Relic Weapons. Most of all was the invaluable data gathered from Cinque and Katrina’s fight, securing invaluable combat data for the future Numbers.

Katrina would only return again after two years of nearly fruitless searching and only because she sought Jail’s reliable information sources. Arriving at his cave hide-out, Katrina met a silent and taciturn girl while waiting for confirmation of the news from the scientist. She look upon the girl and saw a trace of herself within the little Lutecia. Out of curiosity, she found out the girl took after her mother, being exceptionally talented in summoning.

On a whim, Katrina took Luteica into her hands for a short while, teaching the young girl the basics of the Belka-style of summoning. Strangely, Katrina assisted in Lutecia’s first summon, bringing forth a humanoid insect droid, which Lutecia named Garyuu after twenty unsuccessful tries.

Katrina left the very next day, having obtained the information she needed. Noted was how Lutecia attempted to use her newly learned summoning spell to go after the departing girl. Katrina managed to stop the rash action and offered a small smile at the purple-haired summoner before leaving.

Onwards to what the girl is capable of.

Abilities/Skills

The Eye of Fire accounts for a large portion of Katrina’s abilities, foremost her increased regeneration abilities and to a degree, her ageless body. Her regeneration abilities are equal to some of the strongest healing spells known, as well as making her impervious to most ailments and sicknesses. Though very beneficial, Katrina is not immortal. Any lost limbs, punctured heart and decapitation are permanent and will kill her though she can recover from slightly less severe injuries such as ruptured organs or punctured lungs.

Katrina now also commands the element of fire as well as retaining her natural born affinity towards water/ice spells, granting her the unique status of dual-wielding two elements at one go. It can be considered fire is now her dominant element and water/ice, while being her natural affinity, is now relegated to her weaker element. Of note is that after the fusing of the Eye into her body, Katrina had to start over as a mage, owning to the clash over the sudden inclusion of another element into her body. Ironically enough, she had much better control over her magic now and so picked up skills faster than she had as a normal mage, enabling her to learn more skills in the same amount of time than she did before.

This of course showed in her skills, as she now possessed an unsurpassed degree of control in forming and manipulating her spells than any other mage of her time.

Katrina’s control improved beyond simply in her magical skills. Her previously wild and violent visions are now clear and regulated, and with some practice Katrina even created a “on-off” button, so to speak in regulating the usage of her unique skill.

Going in-depth to her Rare Skill, if it could be defined as one, Katrina can “see” the dark memories of people, and to a lesser degree experience the scene exactly as it happened. Memories, feelings and emotions tied to negative events in general humans kept hidden away and locked in the deepest recesses of their minds, nothing and no one was safe from this deeply intense intrusion of their privacy so long as Katrina chose to pick them as a target.

The physical aspects of her skill include some other effects as well. Katrina can choose to focus on an individual or a group of people within an area, as long as they are within 18 meters of her. Tell tale signs when she is using her skill are the commonly felt unpleasant sensations and heavy atmosphere of those being subjected to it. Ranging from simply feeling unwell to feelings of dread and panic in between, and if sufficient time passes, suffering temporal breakdowns at the extreme. Katrina is on the receiving end as well if she keeps it up beyond fifteen minutes, possibly being strongly affected and distracted by her victims’ memories enough to suffer a grievous injury. She has developed a level of resistance, numbed after so much exposure though the real threat is possible insanity if she attempts to take on too many people at one go.

Usage is rather limited in combat, other than simply unnerving her opponents with the information she uses as taunts to agitate them and create an opening she can exploit to take them down.

With the initial fusion of the Eye consuming a large portion of her mana, Katrina was forced to invoke upon a rather vicious ability of the Eye: draining Linker Cores to fill up her own mana reserves. Her early victims included magical beasts and later on mages though in time that need has been nullified as Katrina’s Linker Core eventually adapted to the risk of being consumed by the Eye itself. Similar to Book of Darkness in that the Eye is able to drain a Core down to a minute size as well, the Eye differs in that it can drain the Core to the point of collapse, effectively crippling any mage if Katrina so chooses to. The limitations of the absorption would be the presence of any kind of magical defense would cut short the process.

Of all the benefits the Eye provided, there are drawbacks as well. Katrina cannot use any device at all, owning to the fact that any device she channels mana into promptly explodes into a brilliant fireball so she’s stripped of the advantages of being a device wielder. Being a device-less mage, she has to manually form and maintain each spell she casts, including the most basic of flight spells, in addition to being unable to use the highly complex spells that would require the support of a device. She has no problems dumping out raw mana in large quantities though. Katrina has managed to alleviate the problem somewhat, owing to her vast accumulated battlefield experience and higher than average control abilities she possesses, including certain tricks to even the odds in combat.

Katrina is sufficiently proficient in weapons skills, having used various kinds of armed devices purely for physical strikes and parries though this often pales when exchanging blows with other cartridge-enhance device wielders. As such she is forced to engage in range combat most of the times, something she was at a disadvantage until she used the Mid-system to supplement her style though still paling in comparison when standing off at range with a sufficiently proficient Mid mage.

Over time, Katrina picked up and perfected her dagger skills, being a expert in both using them as projectile weapons or engaging in melee combat with them. She is highly accurate and often dual-wields the daggers until she hurls them straight at her target or used as an inefficient exploding projectile when charged with her mana.

Moving on to her magical arts, Katrina has perfected her usage of spells over time. In addition to possessing very high control, her spells has been reduced to minimum strain and maximum output though her output remains poor in complex spells. Katrina is a natural born illusionist and soon specialized in particle manipulation as well, putting her high degree of control to great use in relatively simple spells such as binds and defensive measures.

The Eye’s influence shows up here again. Primarily, Katrina’s magic color is silver until she invokes upon the Eye of Fire’s destructive abilities, whereby it turns bright red. That is often the case when she experiences bloodlust as well. Most prominently, Katrina’s fire spells has some vicious attributes. The fire from her resulting spell is very resilient and sticks to anything for a long time, much like olden napalm. It also spreads at frightening speed in the presence of mana rich environments, attributing to its ability to use the surrounding mana particles to fuel its growth. As such, it’s particularly effective at breaking down magical defenses such as barriers and barrier jackets, burning many mages alive who were often over-reliant on their magical defenses to tide them through.

Her ice spells remain decent though their output fluctuates from time to time, especially when Katrina is heavily reliant on fire spells and she suddenly uses an ice spell, often resulting in the spell being much weaker than usual.

Over time, Katrina picked up the Belkan-style summoning skills and later on the Mid-system of magic as well. Strangely, her skills in summoning are rather limited and Katrina is only able to summon ice elementals under the branch of summoning forth creatures.

Though able to utilize both systems efficiently, her own attempts to fuse spells between the two systems has proven less than ideal at times. Case in point, Katrina nearly killed herself when she mixed in the Belkan-style of teleport-summons with a certain Mid spell-style. Attempting the spell beforehand on a lizard resulted in only the top of it being teleported, which gave even her the creeps back then. Failures aside, successful attempts at fusing spells and styles together has given unique results from time to time.

Katrina can hold her own in melee against most Belkan knights, owning to weapon skills and reflexes honed by experience. In fairly recent times she has included the use of the weapon given to her by Jail as part of her melee fighting style. Surtr, renamed from its original Espada, has four different forms to match her needs and restrains. It can take the form of a rapier, a claymore, a katana or an nodachi. Each form change requires mana expenditure equal to one cartridge and Sutr is limited to the equivalent of 3 cartridges before it runs dry. Any attempts to use her own mana to charge Surtr will result in yet another fiery explosion so Katrina refrains from that.

Katrina’s barrier jacket has two forms, depending on the situation she will change into the appropriate form.

Silver Form: the jacket’s primary form when Katrina engages in combat. Covers the entire body from neck to toe and features better protection around the shoulder and waist areas. Offers better defense and suited for mid to long range fighting.

Spectral Form: the jacket shrinks down to a skin tight piece, alternating between black and white as the main color. Fingerless gloves and shoe parts are bare and slightly detached to allow ease of rotation Gold and red lines primarily go down the right extremities of the jacket. Defensive values take a big drop here as it is designed for easier concealment as well as ease of movement at close to melee range combat. An interesting thing to note that the lines currently only cover 60% of the total jacket’s area though whether if that is of any importance remains to be seen.
