The Belkan system once rivaled the Midchildan system, but is now in decline, though powerful practitioners still exists. In StrikerS, we only have Ancient and Neo Belkan IIRC. Why they don't try and learn the real thing instead of engaging in magic piracy is beyond me, but I believe it could be either due to

Belka chose the path of close-ranged, 1-to-1 combat over ranged and 1-to-many combat (good duelists, but not-so-good when mobbed). In terms of emitting and controlling emitted magical energy, it is inferior to Midchilda, but it redeems itself in terms of power. Most of the ranged spells shown either require mana to be forged into a solid form (the Dagger spells), or requires a medium to channel mana out (Vita's Schwalbefliegen, Signum's ranged spells).

Belkan knights generally use armed devices, which are weapon-type devices equipped with the Cartridge system not found amongst Midchildan staves (with the exception of Nanoha, Fate and Tiana. But then again, Cross Mirage isn't a staff, but rather a one-of-a-kind device). Despite the benefits of the Cartridge system, the difficulty in its use is actually one of the reasons for the decline of the Belkan style.

Besides the Cartridge system, Belka also boast of the ultimate stage in Intelligent Device development: the Unison Device.

(If you ask me, it seems that Belkan researchers tend to come up with the craziest stuff that, while wildly powerful, are also terribly hard to master.)

Regarding the claim that Ancient Belka is also proficient in beam-spamming like Midchilda, honestly I'm not so sure about this. The only Ancient Belkan user shown capable of this is Hayate, but we must remember that Hayate's spells come from the Tome of the Night Sky, which doesn't just contain Ancient Belkan spells. There is also a possibility that Hayate or Reinforce might have used or modified spells from other systems.

The above is whatever I could gather from Nanohawiki's entry on the Belkan Style as well as this page containing a Chinese translation of the magic used in series 1 and A's.

Add-on: It just occurs to me that, if we categorise Midchilda and Belka in terms of Nen, the former would be pre-dominately Emission-type while the latter would fit the description for Reinforcement/Enhancement.

Not so. Land a powerful enough blow and she can be disabled. Regeneration need only be considered a factor outside of combat since it's not that powerful in the first place. As for her all-rounded skills, time and experience is a good excuse.

As for passing judgement, that can wait until her spell list is complete, which is going to be just as wide as her skills.

C.C. in her original essence is pretty far off from what I'm trying with Katrina, since she is still an enigmatic character. Katrina should be simpler than the depth I perceived of C.C.

Don't forget she's a very experienced jack of all trades as well.

I find it easier to write if I just disregard what's coming out and let it flow though a lot doesn't make sense later on. Currently the planned scenario is ready, with inclusion of Gen as well as 4 other new OCs I should be introducing into the story once I'm done on Katrina's profile. Although I have to say SS04 threw quite a wrench into my plans..

Katrina did force Megane to watch on as she brutalized Quint and a three way confrontation between her and the Alpinos should be very interesting. Possibilities abound.

Xiahou Yi (夏侯仪) from the 天地劫 series, a wuxia-fantasy RPG by the (imho) now-fallen Han Dynasty . His popularity in the first game was such that the following game was a "prequel" dealing entirely with his past.

Like Katrina, Ice and Fire-aligned magus (though his starting spell is a Fire spell), though he tops it up with dark magic as well. Great offensive magus, and in his own story he also have one of the most nifty barrier spells I've ever seen (defends entire party from all attacks until the timer runs out). Like most magi he has a fairly weak constitution (in-game) but his physical attack is surprisingly decent, and his weapons are fairly unique for a magus (daggers in his youth and metal claws in his later years, due to him losing one of his hands in an incident).

Like most protagonists, an idealistic but pragmatic fellow in his youth, though not without his own unique PoV. A twist of fate turned him into a bitter man, willing to risk the world for his personal goal. The typical anti-hero, but quite a cool chap .

As for your question , Katrina's magic style is still predominatly AB though closer to a mix of Hayate and the Wolkies style. For the inclusion of Mid-magic, it's used to supplement her range abilities and is part of her casting style for her bigger spells, much like how Hayate uses both the triangle and circle in casting sometimes.

From my recent findings on Nanohawiki, that the Belkan race originated from a different world other than Mid, and that the Belkan Homeworld, like Al Hazerd, was destroyed due to LL misuse, I now believe that the actual reason creating for Neo Belka may be similar, if not exactly, Possibility B. It is entirely possible that the Belkan fugitives on Mid lost much of their magical heritage and were forced to rebuilt their now-lost style based on whatever they had at hand, namely the Midchildan Style.

Gauging this theory from some observations- which ones i can't tell for now. But the addition of cartridge systems has made me think- "if they are that powerful already, why add boosters?". That could only mean one thing for me, that the form is weakening. Or in another viewpoint, the enemies are now getting too strong for Mid-type's own good...

There is no such thing as too much power. In war, be it technological or military conflict, it is only sensible for those having the upper-hand to make sure that they remain so, much more those locked in a draw.

If I'm fighting with someone who is my equal to the death, any bit of advantage is welcome, if not desperately anticipated.

Agreed, except that Unison Devices are always dangerous to those not ready to work with them. It's not the matter of LC draining, of which, IIRC, the corrupted Tome alone is guilty of. The real danger in using a UD is to have the UD overwhelming the Meister's consciousness, like what happened to Hayate initially. (On a sidenote, this could also be a problem with IDs as well, as written in the novel). If I may be nasty, using a UD can somewhat be like making a pact with the Dark One.

The crack confuses me involving this device since I don't know what it is...

And because I'm too lazy to quote usually... I think the main reason the TSAB doesn't just give everyone Catridge systems, is mentioned in A's itself. Assuming the main Device used is say Intelligent, the System can destroy it due to it's sensitivity. I imagine even a Storage Device wasn't designed to support one. Armed Devices are likely specifically built for it.

So I guess it's a matter of: "We don't wanna spend money developing stronger Intelligent/Storage Devices..."

Although I guess by that logic Raging Heart or Bardiche could've busted by now but... I guess it all depends in the number of cartridges being used and the strength of the mage wielding it. *Shrug* I'm just a Nanon00b so

Finally got some inspiration to write another piece from this...unique PoV that, as far as I know, only I have used so far .

Remorse. Guilt. Pain.
I had once thought that I understood these feelings. Dictionaries from numerous worlds give a clear understanding as to what these emotions are and how they come to be. Or at least so I thought until I met him. It was just a few years ago when we were introduced to each other for the first time. I had gone over his personnel file and knew all there was to know about him. Once again, I would be proven wrong during the course of our relationship. There is a saying on his world that you shouldn't judge a book by its cover. It couldn't be any truer than in the case of my Partner, Shamsel Nagisa.

Our first meeting in that TSAB room was an 'eye opening' experience for me. Having gone over his personnel file, it gave off the impression of a lonely, lost child with great magic potential. When that door opened and a beaming, energetic young boy walked in, I began to wonder if they had brought him into the wrong room or gave me the wrong file. I was wrong in both cases. Like many new Devices, I had no designation at the time. When asked what he wished to call me, he paused for a moment before slowly replying:

"Tuebor."

The form he had chosen for me was also rather interesting. Most mages preferred using their own variation of a staff to compliment the long-range Mid-Childa magic style. Instead, I found myself taking on the form of a naginta. When asked about it, my Partner had replied that he wanted something that he could use to attack as well as defend with. Eventually I would also discover that he had a fascination with the culture of another country on his world which influenced his decision a bit.

Thus began our partnership. It was still rather daunting to me that after all my Partner had been through he could have such a...friendly and energetic personality. Several months would pass as we trained together under the TSAB before I would find the answers to my confusion.

Shamsel lies down on his bed in the dorms, staring at the white and blue card in his hand.

"Ne, Tuebor?"

The blue gem in the middle of the card flickered in response.

"Do you think...that it's alright? For me to be living under this lie...under this false mask?"

I do not understand.

He chuckles, rolling onto his side as he turns the Device in his hand.

"I'm sure you do know. This...emotional facade that I've been using all these months."

What do you mean, Partner?

"All that I am...has been nothing but a lie, a cheap performance. Everyone thinks that I'm just fine and dandy...just a normal, happy kid learning magic. But it's all just a lie. I'm not happy, I'm not alright. I'm sure you know how I ended up here."

The Device make no efforts to try and respond. Shamsel wipes away a lone tear before continuing.

"I'm not even supposed to be here. I'm supposed to be at home, on Earth, giving a normal life with my parents and..and...my s-sisters. But no, I'm here in another dimension learning magic. The price? Their lives, Tuebor, their lives. I never asked for this. I wish that it had all never happened!"

Tears continued to freely cascade down from his blood shot eyes. Both hands clutched the card-shaped Device tightly as soft sobs echoed in the dark room.

What would they say?

Red eyes stared at artificial blue.

"Wh-what?"

Your family. What would they say?

"Th-that I'm a failure! I failed them...all of them! I let them die right before my eyes because I couldn't do anything!!"

I believe...that you did not fail them then, sir. You are failing them now.

This time it was Shamsel's turn to be caught speechless.

You did all you could, sir. There was nothing you could have done to stop a mage in your current state. But you managed to survive. Would you have their sacrifice be in vain?

"But...I couldn't protect them..."

Because it was beyond your current ability to do such, sir. You now have been provided the opportunity to gain that ability.

"Ability? You mean to pr-protect?"

Yes, sir.

The young mage laid there, letting the words sink in.

"The ability to protect...to protect others..."

Yes, sir.

"Can I...do you think I could? Gain the power to protect others?"

Of course, sir.

He manages a weak smile before clutching the Device close to his chest.

"Thank you, Tuebor."

They would be proud, sir.

To this day I still do not understand why I made that ending remark. It was rather odd, but it felt like the right thing to do. That night was the turning point in our relationship. After that day my Partner no longer forced that carefree facade. Rather he let it all come naturally. He was no longer as fixated on his past as he once was. Now he strove to improve his magical abilities so that he could protect the ones that he cared about, so no one would have to live through the pain that he knew.

We became much closer. At times he would confide in me, while other times he would tell me stories about his life on Earth and his family. I was honored by all the trust that he put in me. However nothing would have prepared me for that one day. He had often mumbled complaints about my inactive form, saying that it was cumbersome to carry around such a large item in his pockets all the time. Over the course of two weeks he had gone around talking to the technicians to find someone who could help him with his 'dilemma.' Eventually his searching yielded fruit and I was handed over to be modified without informing me as to what the change was to be. When I was reactivated, it was a rather large shock. He had told me about his late-father's ring that he always wore around his finger, but I never expected him to integrate it into my structure. I do not think that there was any way to describe how I felt at that moment. It was then I knew...I knew that no matter that happened I would be by his side to protect him and aid him in his goals.

Training finished and we were assigned on several patrol missions. We would encounter the occasional smuggler or low-rank criminal, but nothing too great. At least until that incident. It was extremely hard to watch as his comrades fell around him under the surprise attack. We gave it our all in hopes of reinforcements arriving. Reinforcements never came. The situation went from bad to worse, but my Partner never gave up...until she fell. As much as I try, I can't banish his screams from my memories. I had heard him scream and cry in his sleep on numerous occasions when the dreams came back to haunt him, but this time...was unbearable. Then I felt it. I wasn't sure at first, but then I felt it again, stronger. I could also sense his thoughts...of pain, anger, remorse...fear. It was then I decided to act. After it was all over, my Partner had no recollection of what happened. When asked about the event, I lied. I claimed that the assault had damaged my systems and I had no data from what happened towards the end of the battle. They downloaded the false data that I constructed which confirmed what I told them. I kept the real records protected and sealed deep within my core.

Afterwards we had no choice but to transfer out of the unit. My partner was deeply troubled for some time after, but eventually recovered. Although the dreams were another story. We soon found ourselves being placed a new unit, Rogue Squadron. Hopefully we can start anew here and my Partner can move on. He is my Partner, Shamsel Nagisa, and I am his Device Tuebor, the protector. I know that, no matter what happens, I will always be by his side. No matter what.

History/Background
Born into a noble family, Katrina was orphaned shortly after birth when her parents were caught up in the vicious fighting common back in that period. She succeeded her parents as an only child and was brought up by the family advisors.

Katrina was often uncomfortable around people and frequently turned away visitors when she was feeling unwell and spent much of her childhood in solitude, resulting in her being a quiet and reclusive child. Her sole joy was in studies of the magical arts, showing great aptitude for it as well. The young child, in rare displays of mischief, would trip or alter the appearance of her many tutors, often to their bemused misfortune. She would go on to find her interests struck by song and music in time.

Even at a tender age, Katrina had her exposure of affairs beyond her. Between her many studies and the history of the world, Katrina could not fully comprehend the workings of why people sought the political and warfare of their time, which only brought ceaseless conflict and turmoil, though evident the outcomes would be. Her own answers, though inadequate for now, would have a deeper effect on her mindset in the future.

Katrina completed her primary magical education by age 12, even being able to manage a degree of flight, though still far from the level of control shown by veterans on the battlefield. Among her many achievements and gifts, she was also born with a voice that was described by all as the very ‘voice of the heavens’. Her fame as a songstress spread until she was called upon to act as one in the most unlikely and undesirable of places possible, out on the battlefields.

Katrina performed her duty splendidly though her performance was only a prelude to the beginning, marked by her collapse soon after. When inquired about the incident, she could only explain in bits and pieces what she experienced before her collapse. The surroundings had felt ‘heavy’ and she glimpsed flashes of memories. Memories of other people and all terrible in depiction. The next few years would be marked with frequent occurrences of such, weighing down heavily onto the young girl’s mind, each black-out with increasing clarity and defilement in her mind.

The next few years saw Katrina among the places of other nobles, though none as young as her and already participating in political affairs. Those in doubts and underestimation of the young lady were quickly surprised by her sharp mind and sharper words, honed by tutors and advisors to prepare her for the treacherous realm she was stepping into. Swayed over by her charismatic charm and words, the support of the nobles cemented her previously dubious position of being the youngest noble ever in control of one of the Five Great Houses into one of great power and position.

Being in the place of such people did not sit well with her though, for she had heard and in some cases, saw the deeds they had done, which brought disgust and repulsion of no end to her. Considering it a necessary evil, she partook in working with them in the name of the empire to her fullest extent while in reality she had no wish of any of this other than to fulfill the duty she had to carry in her stead of her parents.

The maturing young girl’s joys remained in the practice of magic, and indulgence with song and music in her secluded mansion retreat deep within some of the most beautiful areas on the planet whenever the chance arose. Those were the few things that gave her much-needed moments of quiet tranquility among the ugliness of humans, the former becoming increasingly rare as she learned more of the latter.

Things were rapidly going out of control at the frontlines. Nations in conflict grew ever more impatient to either end the fighting or finish the conquest they sought. Desperate measures were implemented in the name of such immediate needs. Various kinds of experimentation on mages to enhance their powers, drugs and chemicals to boost the capabilities of soldiers, deployment of conventional, biological and magical weaponry that devastated everything on the battlefield, wasting both the land and the soldiers from both sides who died on it.

All took a sharp dive towards a downwards spiral when one side broke the sole and unwritten rule common in warfare: Lost Logias as weapons of war.

With that the gloves came off. Each and every battle that involved a Lost Logia brought a swift and overwhelming end and in turn added pressure to the escalating situation. Katrina was ordered to be part of a convoy to transport and guard the Eye of Fire, a highly dangerous and powerful artifact even among Lost Logia, to where a critical area was in danger of being overwhelmed by enemy forces.

The convoy was heavily guarded but enemy forces had gotten wind of the transport nonetheless and had moved to intercept the Lost Logia for themselves. The Eye of Fire was too considered too dangerous to be simply left alone, hence the desperate preemptive strike.

The assault proved to be a much bloodier affair than expected by both sides. Katrina, being the bearer of the Eye, was overwhelmed by the clash and in desperation, channeled all her strength into the Lost Logia in misplaced hopes to end the attack quickly.

The Logia proved too much for Katrina to control, as it soon went on to draw mana from her Linker Core even after being awakened. Going berserk soon after, all in the near vicinity was killed. The fires unleashed were of such strength that the very air on the battlefield turned to a raging inferno and both sides were decimated within minutes. The flames went unquenched, going on to consume the nearby regions as well, sparing nothing within its reach.

The horrific aftermath was explained as the Logia going berserk and destroying itself in the process, consuming regions on both sides of the border. The incident that gave both sides pause about the consequences of dabbling with ancient artifacts recklessly as weapons and even ceased combat for awhile came to be known as the Day of the Tears of Fire.

Amazingly and unknown to others, Katrina was the sole survivor in the incident. Albeit badly burned, Linker Core severely exhausted and near the verge of death. Her subsequent survival later could only be credited to one explanation: The Eye was not destroyed but had somehow fused with her body, enabling her to survive the cataclysmic turn of events.

Still, the after effects were yet to come. Barely alive, Katrina could not exert control over the Eye that was now within her, every so often setting something ablaze or even her body sometimes. Enduring excruciating pain at the torture of her body, it took days for her complete recovery and several weeks of intensive meditation to develop the necessary restrain to safeguard herself.

Katrina knew that it would be better for her to remain dead and missing otherwise to face some very tough questions she would have to answer. Her status of a Lost Logia-infused mage would also be subjected to close scrutiny if she ever returned to her country, which certainly would include the scientists eager to study her as a freak experiment. Without much of a choice left, she hid herself at the edge of the empire, living in isolation.

One thing became increasingly apparent to Katrina as the days went by. The young woman had effectively stopped aging since the fateful day, another attribute that could only be explained by the fusion of the Lost Logia into her body. For good or for worse, Katrina was now free to explore and learn more magic skills than any other mage could in their lifetimes now that time was no longer a concern to her frame.

The fighting and unrest continued meanwhile. The use of Lost Logia as weapons reached its climax several decades after with the deployment of the Cradle of the Saint King by the Belkan Empire. The Cradle returned so badly damaged that it crashed shortly there after. With planetary wide fighting going on, few knew of the Cradle’s return save for the mages that happened to be fighting near its crash site. Katrina was in the nearby region making short work of deserter mages from the Empire when the Cradle fell in the distance.

The next century and a half bore witness to the darker histories of Mid-Childa as the entire planet subsequently descended into anarchy with the collapse of the Belkan Empire. Taking it as a great opportunity to test her limits, Katrina was involved in a fair amount of fighting and burned many fortresses to the ground, ironically many which were defended by her fellow Belkans. The fighting ravaged on until the founding of the TSAB some seventy five years later. Serving the need to stop the decades old fighting and bring the warring factions under a single authority, the period was marked as the Reunification Wars, during which Katrina partook in some of the most intense battles to have ever been fought on Mid-Childan soil. Eventually the fighting died down and the period of rebuilding the devastated planet begun as well as ushering in the establishment of the TSAB control over Mid-Childa.

With the end of the fighting, Mid-Childa no longer held interest for Katrina and she left the planet, though she came back and left several times after her first departure, for reasons unknown.
Returning from her latest trip, a certain discovery came to her attention. A recent archeological dig yielded some pretty interesting artifacts, of which among the Jewel Seeds initially unearthed by the Scrya clan, an old magical tome was also discovered on the same excavation site, with the ancient text on the book claiming it to be the Grimoire of Fire.

Personality/Behavior
Katrina before the fateful incident was a simple girl troubled by her circumstances. A young noble who had to handle the difficulties of her position as well as being tormented by unknown visions from time to time. Though she held much respect and authority, Katrina in reality had no wish to even bother over such matters, let alone be in charge of it all. A simple girl who was just curious and eager to delve into the magical arts as much as possible, as well as enjoy the pleasures life could offer in its limits. Or so she thought.

The Day of Tears of Fire changed all that, and affected in many ways simply than at the surface level and would continue to do so long after it ended. Ironically, her former wish was granted in a twisted way though clearly at the cost of changing her very existence as well as being subjected to a unknown frustration born from that day and the hazards of a enormous power she barely had any knowledge of, let alone controlling it.

Before the incident, her visions was hazy and wild at best though long after she found the visions to be as vivid as recalling her own memories. Acceptance slowly set in until she was no longer afraid of the visions, partially because of the degree of control she had now.

Over the long decades, Katrina changed, as decreed by change itself, by the events set forth around her. Being involved and seeing the repetition of mistakes by those around her confused her. Confusion changed into frustration and later, again into acceptance. Such an impact was clearly reflected in her slowly cynical and aggressive manner over time.

As of now, Katrina has grown into a person of many faces but it’s clear at least that she is very much a being of desire and impulses with a unique perception of the world in general. Supremely confident in manner, Katrina has no doubt of her self. Ruthless and focused, Katrina often seeks to obtain what she wants through a number of possible methods rather than the most obvious solution, as she is fond of the planning and manipulation involved. Though she will try things in a roundabout manner, her straightforward manner shows up in demanding what she wants, case in point wrangling information from a certain scientist harboring the greatest of ambitions.

Katrina can switch her demeanor between aggressive and excited to one of complete genteel and calm and back in the next second so reading her is harder than anything else. Her behavior is certainly schizophrenic at times but a sharp and analytical mind is always in control behind whatever façade she may be putting on. Likewise it’s hard to guess when she truly means what she says or when she is simply playing, exploiting the use of words and gestures to their fullest extend, as part of her mind games.

Her manners in disguise often portray her as a polite person, though not always to the point and slightly ditzy as well. Her impulsive side surfaces frequently here with boredom though she has never given the game away. Katrina can blend in so well with her conduct that her vicious and malicious side is something most would never even imagine of her.

On the other hand, Katrina’s dark personality shows through even more brilliantly. A bona fide sadist developed from her long periods of solitude and even longer periods spent on the bloody battlefields of her time. Be it in questioning or fighting, she prefers to give the worst option to her opponents, leaving them with hell or a worst kind of hell one way or another. Ironically, she has the best control of her impulses in this form and her actions are as daring and bold as she is confident. Tempered by her mentality, the slightest hints of impatience only show from time to time though she is never one to worry or be upset even if the situation is unfavorable.

Unpredictable and a wild card in any situation, Katrina remains a formidable force in any encounter. Her most recent and prominent partner is none other than the Orphan of Al Hazard, Jail Scaglietti.

I'll keep it in mind..

As for passing judgement, that can wait until her spell list is complete, which is going to be just as wide as her skills.

Like many new Devices, I had no designation at the time. When asked what he wished to call me, he paused for a moment before slowly replying:

"Tuebor."

The form he had chosen for me was also rather interesting. Most mages preferred using their own variation of a staff to compliment the long-range Mid-Childa magic style. Instead, I found myself taking on the form of a naginta. When asked about it, my Partner had replied that he wanted something that he could use to attack as well as defend with. Eventually I would also discover that he had a fascination with the culture of another country on his world which influenced his decision a bit.

Thus began our partnership. It was still rather daunting to me that after all my Partner had been through he could have such a...friendly and energetic personality. Several months would pass as we trained together under the TSAB before I would find the answers to my confusion.

Shamsel lies down on his bed in the dorms, staring at the white and blue card in his hand.

"Ne, Tuebor?"

The blue gem in the middle of the card flickered in response.

"Do you think...that it's alright? For me to be living under this lie...under this false mask?"

I do not understand.

He chuckles, rolling onto his side as he turns the Device in his hand.

"I'm sure you do know. This...emotional facade that I've been using all these months."

What do you mean, Partner?

"All that I am...has been nothing but a lie, a cheap performance. Everyone thinks that I'm just fine and dandy...just a normal, happy kid learning magic. But it's all just a lie. I'm not happy, I'm not alright. I'm sure you know how I ended up here."

The Device make no efforts to try and respond. Shamsel wipes away a lone tear before continuing.

"I'm not even supposed to be here. I'm supposed to be at home, on Earth, giving a normal life with my parents and..and...my s-sisters. But no, I'm here in another dimension learning magic. The price? Their lives, Tuebor, their lives. I never asked for this. I wish that it had all never happened!"

Tears continued to freely cascade down from his blood shot eyes. Both hands clutched the card-shaped Device tightly as soft sobs echoed in the dark room.

What would they say?

Red eyes stared at artificial blue.

"Wh-what?"

Your family. What would they say?

"Th-that I'm a failure! I failed them...all of them! I let them die right before my eyes because I couldn't do anything!!"

I believe...that you did not fail them then, sir. You are failing them now.

This time it was Shamsel's turn to be caught speechless.

You did all you could, sir. There was nothing you could have done to stop a mage in your current state. But you managed to survive. Would you have their sacrifice be in vain?

"But...I couldn't protect them..."

Because it was beyond your current ability to do such, sir. You now have been provided the opportunity to gain that ability.

"Ability? You mean to pr-protect?"

Yes, sir.

The young mage laid there, letting the words sink in.

"The ability to protect...to protect others..."

Yes, sir.

"Can I...do you think I could? Gain the power to protect others?"

Of course, sir.

He manages a weak smile before clutching the Device close to his chest.

"Thank you, Tuebor."

They would be proud, sir.

To this day I still do not understand why I made that ending remark. It was rather odd, but it felt like the right thing to do. That night was the turning point in our relationship. After that day my Partner no longer forced that carefree facade. Rather he let it all come naturally. He was no longer as fixated on his past as he once was. Now he strove to improve his magical abilities so that he could protect the ones that he cared about, so no one would have to live through the pain that he knew.

We became much closer. At times he would confide in me, while other times he would tell me stories about his life on Earth and his family. I was honored by all the trust that he put in me. However nothing would have prepared me for that one day. He had often mumbled complaints about my inactive form, saying that it was cumbersome to carry around such a large item in his pockets all the time. Over the course of two weeks he had gone around talking to the technicians to find someone who could help him with his 'dilemma.' Eventually his searching yielded fruit and I was handed over to be modified without informing me as to what the change was to be. When I was reactivated, it was a rather large shock. He had told me about his late-father's ring that he always wore around his finger, but I never expected him to integrate it into my structure. I do not think that there was any way to describe how I felt at that moment. It was then I knew...I knew that no matter that happened I would be by his side to protect him and aid him in his goals.

Training finished and we were assigned on several patrol missions. We would encounter the occasional smuggler or low-rank criminal, but nothing too great. At least until that incident. It was extremely hard to watch as his comrades fell around him under the surprise attack. We gave it our all in hopes of reinforcements arriving. Reinforcements never came. The situation went from bad to worse, but my Partner never gave up...until she fell. As much as I try, I can't banish his screams from my memories. I had heard him scream and cry in his sleep on numerous occasions when the dreams came back to haunt him, but this time...was unbearable. Then I felt it. I wasn't sure at first, but then I felt it again, stronger. I could also sense his thoughts...of pain, anger, remorse...fear. It was then I decided to act. After it was all over, my Partner had no recollection of what happened. When asked about the event, I lied. I claimed that the assault had damaged my systems and I had no data from what happened towards the end of the battle. They downloaded the false data that I constructed which confirmed what I told them. I kept the real records protected and sealed deep within my core.

Afterwards we had no choice but to transfer out of the unit. My partner was deeply troubled for some time after, but eventually recovered. Although the dreams were another story. We soon found ourselves being placed a new unit, Rogue Squadron. Hopefully we can start anew here and my Partner can move on. He is my Partner, Shamsel Nagisa, and I am his Device Tuebor, the protector. I know that, no matter what happens, I will always be by his side. No matter what.

He liked conversing with his subordinates in his free time; even sometimes bringing along a flask and some glasses of his favorite liqueur. He wasn’t really lax, just very calm most of the time. He still never let people under him cross lines of their authority, and was capable of handing out according punishment casually. That part of him was frightening enough for some. His sense of humor was considered very hard to follow. Several people found his height to be quite imposing, but later finds him to be very likable.

His demeanor in a battlefield hardly changes, except for his unusual silence, preferring telepathical communications with his comrades over shouting. He is usually very condescending towards opponents, furthering his advantage on both mental and emotional factors in the battlefield.


Relationships: He had a wife, two daughters and one son, but they got divorced for some reason; the children staying with their mother. Clyde Harlaown served under him in some occasions; and is an acquaintance of Lindy. His influence is considerably large. He retired nine years before StrikerS, claiming that he was tired and would leave the rest to the future. He was last seen in a planet under TSAB surveillance. His current whereabouts are unknown; however, he seems to still contact some ranking ex-colleagues in the TSAB.


Fighting Style: He specialized in Field-type spells, converting a large area into a combat space which is finely tuned to contribute to the absolute advantage of his troops. As a fighter, he uses ranged attacks. However, getting in melee is hardly a problem for him if he uses a tactical relegation field that cuts down the combat capabilities of would-be melee attackers, allowing him to use point-blank shooting attacks. When push comes to shove, he can use his reinforced staff device, Yggdrasil quite well with combat training from his long years of service in TSAB. Almost nobody could predict his tactics in the battlefield, as he had the habit of bringing about his Field Magic randomly, to the point that the tactic appeared all but logical. Even so, he always seem to be twelve steps ahead, properly coordinating his companions and his own actions to quickly and efficiently deal with opponents. His trademark attack spell is a ‘Buster Snake’, a heavily-controlled Remote Buster Spell. It possesses incredible speed, control and power, allowing him to eliminate multiple targets easily. It took him a good part of thirty years to perfect this spell.


Barrier Jacket: His Barrier Jacket is very similar to that of Chrono Harlaown’s, except being more predominantly black and violet.


Device: His device, Yggdrasil, is an Intelligent Device taking the form of a long golden scepter with an extremely dark ebon orb surrounded by six opposable claws. It’s AI has an unnervingly deep female voice. The sealed form of this device is an earring with a black orb. Over the course of Luozorl’s career, he used an S2U class Storage device and only obtained this custom-made device after retiring.

Teubor is very intelligent for a device. Reminds me of the fic with Raising Heart as the narrator in FFnet. Anyway, this is awesome! melikes the relation of events. But it does make me curious about Shamsel's berserker state...

Like Katrina, Ice and Fire-aligned magus (though his starting spell is a Fire spell), though he tops it up with dark magic as well. Like most magi he has a fairly weak constitution (in-game) but his physical attack is surprisingly decent, and his weapons are fairly unique for a magus (daggers in his youth and metal claws in his later years, due to him losing one of his hands in an incident).

Like most protagonists, an idealistic but pragmatic fellow in his youth, though not without his own unique PoV. A twist of fate turned him into a bitter man, willing to risk the world for his personal goal. The typical anti-hero, but quite a cool chap .

This guy sounds even more like her now, barring the things I have not revealed yet. The part about daggers is certainly a strong link.

I would say her style is very unorthodox as far as Mid and Belkan mages goes so it's not much to take note of.

From my recent findings on Nanohawiki, that the Belkan race originated from a different world other than Mid, and that the Belkan Homeworld, like Al Hazerd, was destroyed due to LL misuse, I now believe that the actual reason creating for Neo Belka may be similar, if not exactly, Possibility B. It is entirely possible that the Belkan fugitives on Mid lost much of their magical heritage and were forced to rebuilt their now-lost style based on whatever they had at hand, namely the Midchildan Style.

This is quite a piece of information and no doubt quite useful and troublesome at the same time.

There is no such thing as too much power. In war, be it technological or military conflict, it is only sensible for those having the upper-hand to make sure that they remain so, much more those locked in a draw.

If I'm fighting with someone who is my equal to the death, any bit of advantage is welcome, if not desperately anticipated.

Agreed, except that Unison Devices are always dangerous to those not ready to work with them. It's not the matter of LC draining, of which, IIRC, the corrupted Tome alone is guilty of. The real danger in using a UD is to have the UD overwhelming the Meister's consciousness, like what happened to Hayate initially. (On a sidenote, this could also be a problem with IDs as well, as written in the novel). If I may be nasty, using a UD can somewhat be like making a pact with the Dark One.

And because I'm too lazy to quote usually... I think the main reason the TSAB doesn't just give everyone Catridge systems, is mentioned in A's itself. Assuming the main Device used is say Intelligent, the System can destroy it due to it's sensitivity. I imagine even a Storage Device wasn't designed to support one. Armed Devices are likely specifically built for it.

So I guess it's a matter of: "We don't wanna spend money developing stronger Intelligent/Storage Devices..."

Although I guess by that logic Raging Heart or Bardiche could've busted by now but... I guess it all depends in the number of cartridges being used and the strength of the mage wielding it. *Shrug* I'm just a Nanon00b so

Well for the fact that the majority of TSAB personnel carry SDs is probably one of the reason as well. As for RH and BA, both were not TSAB produced. RH found by Yuuno(?), BA built by Precia/Linith, so that should be taken into account of their inherent toughness. Come to think of it, Subaru's MC is the only new ID since S1. Well maybe Vice's Storm Raider as well but that can be taken as IDs aren't that common in usage as well.

I had once thought that I understood these feelings. Dictionaries from numerous worlds give a clear understanding as to what these emotions are and how they come to be. Or at least so I thought until I met him. It was just a few years ago when we were introduced to each other for the first time. I had gone over his personnel file and knew all there was to know about him. Once again, I would be proven wrong during the course of our relationship. There is a saying on his world that you shouldn't judge a book by its cover. It couldn't be any truer than in the case of my Partner, Shamsel Nagisa.

Our first meeting in that TSAB room was an 'eye opening' experience for me. Having gone over his personnel file, it gave off the impression of a lonely, lost child with great magic potential. When that door opened and a beaming, energetic young boy walked in, I began to wonder if they had brought him into the wrong room or gave me the wrong file. I was wrong in both cases. Like many new Devices, I had no designation at the time. When asked what he wished to call me, he paused for a moment before slowly replying:

"Tuebor."

The form he had chosen for me was also rather interesting. Most mages preferred using their own variation of a staff to compliment the long-range Mid-Childa magic style. Instead, I found myself taking on the form of a naginta. When asked about it, my Partner had replied that he wanted something that he could use to attack as well as defend with. Eventually I would also discover that he had a fascination with the culture of another country on his world which influenced his decision a bit.

Thus began our partnership. It was still rather daunting to me that after all my Partner had been through he could have such a...friendly and energetic personality. Several months would pass as we trained together under the TSAB before I would find the answers to my confusion.

Shamsel lies down on his bed in the dorms, staring at the white and blue card in his hand.

"Ne, Tuebor?"

The blue gem in the middle of the card flickered in response.

"Do you think...that it's alright? For me to be living under this lie...under this false mask?"

I do not understand.

He chuckles, rolling onto his side as he turns the Device in his hand.

"I'm sure you do know. This...emotional facade that I've been using all these months."

What do you mean, Partner?

"All that I am...has been nothing but a lie, a cheap performance. Everyone thinks that I'm just fine and dandy...just a normal, happy kid learning magic. But it's all just a lie. I'm not happy, I'm not alright. I'm sure you know how I ended up here."

The Device make no efforts to try and respond. Shamsel wipes away a lone tear before continuing.

"I'm not even supposed to be here. I'm supposed to be at home, on Earth, giving a normal life with my parents and..and...my s-sisters. But no, I'm here in another dimension learning magic. The price? Their lives, Tuebor, their lives. I never asked for this. I wish that it had all never happened!"

Tears continued to freely cascade down from his blood shot eyes. Both hands clutched the card-shaped Device tightly as soft sobs echoed in the dark room.

What would they say?

Red eyes stared at artificial blue.

"Wh-what?"

Your family. What would they say?

"Th-that I'm a failure! I failed them...all of them! I let them die right before my eyes because I couldn't do anything!!"

I believe...that you did not fail them then, sir. You are failing them now.

This time it was Shamsel's turn to be caught speechless.

You did all you could, sir. There was nothing you could have done to stop a mage in your current state. But you managed to survive. Would you have their sacrifice be in vain?

"But...I couldn't protect them..."

Because it was beyond your current ability to do such, sir. You now have been provided the opportunity to gain that ability.

"Ability? You mean to pr-protect?"

Yes, sir.

The young mage laid there, letting the words sink in.

"The ability to protect...to protect others..."

Yes, sir.

"Can I...do you think I could? Gain the power to protect others?"

Of course, sir.

He manages a weak smile before clutching the Device close to his chest.

"Thank you, Tuebor."

They would be proud, sir.

To this day I still do not understand why I made that ending remark. It was rather odd, but it felt like the right thing to do. That night was the turning point in our relationship. After that day my Partner no longer forced that carefree facade. Rather he let it all come naturally. He was no longer as fixated on his past as he once was. Now he strove to improve his magical abilities so that he could protect the ones that he cared about, so no one would have to live through the pain that he knew.

We became much closer. At times he would confide in me, while other times he would tell me stories about his life on Earth and his family. I was honored by all the trust that he put in me. However nothing would have prepared me for that one day. He had often mumbled complaints about my inactive form, saying that it was cumbersome to carry around such a large item in his pockets all the time. Over the course of two weeks he had gone around talking to the technicians to find someone who could help him with his 'dilemma.' Eventually his searching yielded fruit and I was handed over to be modified without informing me as to what the change was to be. When I was reactivated, it was a rather large shock. He had told me about his late-father's ring that he always wore around his finger, but I never expected him to integrate it into my structure. I do not think that there was any way to describe how I felt at that moment. It was then I knew...I knew that no matter that happened I would be by his side to protect him and aid him in his goals.

Training finished and we were assigned on several patrol missions. We would encounter the occasional smuggler or low-rank criminal, but nothing too great. At least until that incident. It was extremely hard to watch as his comrades fell around him under the surprise attack. We gave it our all in hopes of reinforcements arriving. Reinforcements never came. The situation went from bad to worse, but my Partner never gave up...until she fell. As much as I try, I can't banish his screams from my memories. I had heard him scream and cry in his sleep on numerous occasions when the dreams came back to haunt him, but this time...was unbearable. Then I felt it. I wasn't sure at first, but then I felt it again, stronger. I could also sense his thoughts...of pain, anger, remorse...fear. It was then I decided to act. After it was all over, my Partner had no recollection of what happened. When asked about the event, I lied. I claimed that the assault had damaged my systems and I had no data from what happened towards the end of the battle. They downloaded the false data that I constructed which confirmed what I told them. I kept the real records protected and sealed deep within my core.

Afterwards we had no choice but to transfer out of the unit. My partner was deeply troubled for some time after, but eventually recovered. Although the dreams were another story. We soon found ourselves being placed a new unit, Rogue Squadron. Hopefully we can start anew here and my Partner can move on. He is my Partner, Shamsel Nagisa, and I am his Device Tuebor, the protector. I know that, no matter what happens, I will always be by his side. No matter what.

The device PoV certainly is a interesting perspective to expand upon. Shamsel has been nicely expanded upon with all the pieces so far and this is another great one.

Though Shamsel is pretty self-conscious of his own flaws and this is pretty informative as well, in a number of ways.

He used to sortie with a command of a small number of decent mages, capable of dominating a large part of any enemy forces with ingenious use of tactics and his incredible abilities as a Mid-Childa mage. His capability of introducing factors outside of enemy calculations earned him the moniker Duke of Deceit.


Personality: Both in casual and formal situations, Luozorl is every bit of a gentleman. His actions are refined and he keeps his tongue in check under all circumstances. He was a charismatic leader and an expert negotiator. In any case, he was depicted as a very likable man. He liked conversing with his subordinates in his free time; even sometimes bringing along a flask and some glasses of his favorite liqueur. He wasn’t really lax, just very calm most of the time. He still never let people under him cross lines of their authority, and was capable of handing out according punishment casually. That part of him was frightening enough for some. His sense of humor was considered very hard to follow. Several people found his height to be quite imposing, but later finds him to be very likable.

His demeanor in a battlefield hardly changes, except for his unusual silence, preferring telepathical communications with his comrades over shouting. He is usually very condescending towards opponents, furthering his advantage on both mental and emotional factors in the battlefield.


Relationships: He had a wife, two daughters and one son, but they got divorced for some reason; the children staying with their mother. Clyde Harlaown served under him in some occasions; and is an acquaintance of Lindy. His influence is considerably large. He retired nine years before StrikerS, claiming that he was tired and would leave the rest to the future. He was last seen in a planet under TSAB surveillance. His current whereabouts are unknown; however, he seems to still contact some ranking ex-colleagues in the TSAB.


Fighting Style: He specialized in Field-type spells, converting a large area into a combat space which is finely tuned to contribute to the absolute advantage of his troops. As a fighter, he uses ranged attacks. However, getting in melee is hardly a problem for him if he uses a tactical relegation field that cuts down the combat capabilities of would-be melee attackers, allowing him to use point-blank shooting attacks. When push comes to shove, he can use his reinforced staff device, Yggdrasil quite well with combat training from his long years of service in TSAB. Almost nobody could predict his tactics in the battlefield, as he had the habit of bringing about his Field Magic randomly, to the point that the tactic appeared all but logical. Even so, he always seem to be twelve steps ahead, properly coordinating his companions and his own actions to quickly and efficiently deal with opponents. His trademark attack spell is a ‘Buster Snake’, a heavily-controlled Remote Buster Spell. It possesses incredible speed, control and power, allowing him to eliminate multiple targets easily. It took him a good part of thirty years to perfect this spell.


Barrier Jacket: His Barrier Jacket is very similar to that of Chrono Harlaown’s, except being more predominantly black and violet.


Device: His device, Yggdrasil, is an Intelligent Device taking the form of a long golden scepter with an extremely dark ebon orb surrounded by six opposable claws. It’s AI has an unnervingly deep female voice. The sealed form of this device is an earring with a black orb. Over the course of Luozorl’s career, he used an S2U class Storage device and only obtained this custom-made device after retiring.

Very nice. Part 1 spoke quite a lot about the Duke and I'll be looking forward to what you will bring up for the rest.
